Lookbua Thai Food Restaurant is a highly-rated, casual neighbourhood eatery located along Samlan Road in Chiang Mai Old City, a stone’s throw from the famous Wat Phra Singh. The restaurant has a patio with few tables that are favoured by most foreigners. More tables are available in the inner dinner area on a raised platform — we preferred this space away from the road.

Lookbua serves a wide range of cooked dishes, including the most-popular Thai delicacies. Roasted duck seems to be one of Lookbua’s specialties with a number of dishes having it. Other specialties are dishes in hot pans.

The Roasted Duck in Red Curry seems really unique — said to be a popular Thai dish but I have not heard about it before. Tender duck meat with crispy skin is chopped and served in red coconut curry that is cooked with Thai eggplants, grapes, tomatoes, etc. The creamy broth is sweet, savoury and mildly spicy. This dish offers a new taste experience simply by putting roasted duck and red curry together.

Oyster Omelette in Hot Pan is one of Lookbua’s signature dishes. It uses big fresh oysters fried in hot pan with egg and tapioca starch till slightly crispy. The omelette sits on a layer of bean sprouts to prevent the oysters from being overcooked. The oysters retained their soft texture and juiciness and the pan-fried eggs have orange yolks.

The Pad Thai with Chicken has well-balanced sweet-savoury flavours. Add some dried chilli powder, sugar, fish sauce or pickled chilli as desired to enhance the flavours to taste. It is a great dish in place of rice or other staples.

The Stir-Fried Kailan with Fried Pork — available with other vegetables too — is another delicious dish. The fried pork belly seems to be the protagonist more than the vegetable. The soft, crispy fried pork has a texture similar to cheese balls, especially after absorbing the savoury sauce.

The Mango Sticky Rice is topped with crispy mung beans that gives the popular Thai dessert additional crunchy texture when eating the soft glutinous sticky rice.

When dining in Thailand, go for fresh coconut juice instead of soft drinks.

Lookbua Thai Food Restaurant is a great choice to go for local Thai food, especially dishes with roasted duck or dishes in hot pans, when in Chiang Mai. And their staff were very friendly.
