Palates & Bagels by The Awesome Mankind (T.A.M.) has a total of 4 outlets in Johor Bahru. We have visited the flagship outlet in Jalan Dhoby, next to Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk, and in AEON Mall Bukit Indah. This time, we came to its outlet in Taman Melodies — also known as Palates & Bagels by T.A.M. – Melodies of Thai. For info., the 4th Palates & Bagels outlet is located in SKS City Mall offering bagels and Western dishes.
The Taman Melodies outlet is housed in a bungalow featuring some similar designs and decorations as the Jalan Dhoby outlet with a warm, cosy setting on its air-conditioned second floor and more seatings in the fanned front porch.

All Palates & Bagels outlets feature different concepts and the Taman Melodies outlet has a Thai-infused concept. Similarly, big-size bagels with sweet / savoury flavours are the signature offerings of this outlet too. Savoury fillings of “Whole Duck Leg”, “Pulled Lamb” and “Beef Brisket” remain the best-sellers with more options available, including vegetarian (truffle mushroom, smashed avocado) and “sweet tooth” fruity (lychee & rose, peach & rose) fillings.

We have tried Beef Brisket Bagel (called “Louis”) at the Jalan Dhoby outlet, and Unagi Bagel and Spicy Butter Milk Chicken Bagel at the AEON Mall Bukit Indah outlet. So, we go for Whole Duck Leg with Garlic Confit & Rosemary Bagel this time.
The savoury bagel dish is served with a whole duck leg confit in orange Dijon mayo sauce, scrambled egg, fresh salad, and slices of tomato, cucumber, cheddar cheese, and accompanied by crispy twisted fries with light seasoning. This is the time to eat a bagel-burger with knife and fork. The tender duck leg meat gives up its delicious meat juice on chewing and added with nice flavours of the mayo sauce with mellow citrusy note and distinct taste of Dijon mustard. And, the bagel’s subtle notes of garlic and rosemary are not masked by the fillings. As always, this is another great-tasting bagel dish.

Under the Menu’s “Thai Specialty” category, there are Tom Yum Seafood (for 2 pax to share), mushroom soup, pomelo salad, fried rice with tiger prawns / crab meat / seabass & white bait, and several flavours of pasta as main dishes. And also finger food and beverages infused with Thai flavours.

The Petai & Tiger Prawn Fried Rice has a simple yet beautiful presentation. The dish uses short, fat Japanese sushi rice to stir-fried with a number of ingredients, including egg and petai (stinky beans), in flavourful herbs and spices. The finished rice is then topped with four de-shelled, grilled tiger prawns, a lime and a stalk of fresh spring onion. The big tiger prawns are fresh, meaty and crunchy and the fried rice tastes similar to kampung fried rice, without spiciness, and the large number of petai seeds (embedded in the rice) contributed its unique taste. Added with citrusy flavour of the lime and subtle flavour of spring onion (yes, I eat it), it is a delicious and flavourful dish.

The Coconut Cendol Latte is a glass of iced espresso added with coconut caramel, coconut milk and greenish cendol jelly — or cendol dessert blended with espresso. The special beverage has smooth blend of flavours between espresso and the coconut ingredients but without much of the sweetness. It is a pleasant and delightful drink.

Cafe-hopping in Johor Bahru? Don’t miss Palates & Bagels in Taman Melodies, its wide range of bagels and Thai-infused specialty dishes and drinks are definitely not to be missed. Like other outlets, the flavourful bagels can be purchased and take home.
