Sin Man Kee Hong Kong Char Chan Teng (新民记香港茶餐厅) is a popular dining chain in Malaysia known for serving Hong Kong-style comfort food, most notably their signature three-generation braised beef noodles and Hong Kong-style lamb curry. Started in Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, Sin Man Kee opened its second outlet in Mid Valley Southkey Mall, in Johor Bahru, in November 2024.

Sin Man Kee has a diverse range of Hong Kong delights on its menu, including a series of braised beef dishes with different combinations of beef brisket, tendon, tripe (honeycomb stomach) and beef balls with / without noodle. There is a long list of HK-style rice dishes (fried rice, cheese baked rice, steamed rice, silky egg rice), noodle dishes (stir-fried beef kway teow, black bean noodle), porridges, curry dishes, toasts, Portuguese egg tarts, and more — including Hainanese chicken rice.

Normally, I will go straight for the beef brisket + tendon + tripe + beef balls combo, which is the restaurant’s signature and I love trying all forms of beef noodle dishes. However, there is one Hong Kong dish that I have been wanting to try for many years and always missed it for whatever reasons, even when I was in Hong Kong, and that dish is on Sin Man Kee’s menu — named as “Singapore-Style Fried Vermicelli” under the Chef’s Recommendation section.
The Singapore-Style Fried Vermicelli (星洲炒米粉) is actually a Hong Kong-invented dish where thin rice vermicelli is stir-fried with a number of ingredients and added with curry seasoning. In Sin Man Kee, the ingredients include egg, bean sprouts, carrot strips, shrimps, greens and (chicken?) sausage slices. It is a nice dish with light wok aroma and mellow curry flavour that is not spicy.

The Curry Fishballs (咖喱鱼丸) is a popular Hong Kong street food — and perfect for pairing it with the non-meaty Singapore-Style Rice Vermicelli. The fried fishballs have firm, bouncy texture and served in a bowl full of curry gravy that is rich in curry flavour and tastes sweet, savoury and spicy. It is so delicious that I added some on the rice vermicelli — in order not to waste the gravy.

The Cold Hong Kong-Style Coffee & Red Bean (港式红豆咖啡) is another specialty of Hong Kong where slow-cooked red beans are frozen and added to iced coffee — contains evaporated / condensed milk. The coffee has low sweetness with the red beans adding its characteristic sweetness and varying textures from soft, long-cooked beans to whole beans that offer some bites. It is an interesting coffee and low in sugar.

I will go for Sin Man Kee’s signature braised beef noodle on the next trip to Mid Valley Southkey Mall.
