Kedai Makan Yean Kee / Yean Kee Beef Noodle (元记牛肉濑粉), a legendary Hainanese beef noodle house in Kluang, serves their traditional beef noodles in Taman Murni, a residential estate not far from Kluang Mall. Began as a pushcart stall in the old Kluang market in the 1930s, it is now run by the third generation of the founding family. Yean Kee has also setup a stall, its second outlet, in Jalan Tasik Indah, near the edge of Kluang.

For over 70 years, Yean Kee has been making its own lai fun (濑粉) from rice. The thick rice noodle is also known as Hailam noodle (海南粉), which is the same type of noodle used in Penang’s famous asam laksa.
Aside from their homemade rice noodle, beef is also Yean Kee’s specialty. Their signature dry-style beef noodle with lai fun is highly recommended. Another signature dish is rendang beef and recommended to pair with rice. There are beef ball noodle, fishball noodle and side dishes too.

Yean Kee’s dry-style Signature Beef Noodle (招牌牛肉濑粉) looks appetising and delicious on first impression. Their savoury-sweet dark sauce is covered by the thick, white lai fun, added with tender beef, tripes, tendons and sliced meat and topped with peanuts, pickled vegetable, spring onions, sesame seeds and a lime for refreshing flavours. The thick rice noodle is soft and with springy texture. This beef noodle is truly delicious.

The Signature Beef Noodle (above) includes all the beefy ingredients, and variants of the beef noodle dish can be created by opting for desired ingredients. This beef noodle has just beef brisket and tripes.

The Signature Rendang Beef (招牌仁当牛肉) with rice is probably the best way to appreciate the great flavours of the rendang beef. The beef is very tender and the rendang gravy, with lots of minced spices, is tasty with just-nice spiciness and flavourful. No wonder this is another signature dish of Yean Kee. Pair this with a stir-fried vegetable dish to complete the meal.

A specialty dish of Yean Kee is their Claypot Bovine Offal Soup (砂煲牛杂汤), stewed long-hours with herbs and spices. However, advance order of at least a day is required — contact no. is +60 12-773 3088.

Despite being located outside Kluang’s town centre, Yean Kee’s beef noodle and rendang beef are delicious dishes to travel all the way there.
