Yi Jian Xiao Mian (壹見小麵) is a Hong Kong-style tea cafe (港式茶餐厅) located in the town centre of Kluang, Johor. Although proclaimed as a “tea cafe” due to its offering of Hong Kong dim sum and various Hong Kong-style dishes, the restaurant serves local delights too, like a Nanyang kopitiam.

Yi Jian Xiao Mian may appear small from its shopfront but it has a larger space with many more seats to the rear. Some of the restaurant’s signature breakfast dishes, such as toasts / sandwiches, egg tarts and wanton noodle, are showcased in posters hanging outside the kitchen. Aside from dim sum, there are traditional toasts, fried rice dishes and a long list of others.

They offer quite a wide range of dim sum dishes to mix and match to make a meal or to go along with other main dishes. I had tried their steamed spare ribs (鼓汁蒸排骨), mixed-filling chee cheong fun (鸳鸯香港猪肠粉), shrimp dumplings (晶莹鲜虾饺) and stuffed egg-plants (茄子酿鱼肉) from the dim sum list. The Salted Egg Oyster Roll (咸蛋耗士卷) is a unique fried meat roll that is added with dried oyster and salted egg, which give the meat roll their characteristic flavours and is delicious.

The dry-style Wanton Noodle, denoted as “Egg Noodle (全蛋面)” on the menu, is available with dark sauce only. Other than char siew and meat dumplings, crispy fried pork lards are added to the noodle too. The egg noodle is springy with tender barbecue pork and the meat dumplings are mild-savoury. This is truly delicious.

The Penang Char Kway Teow (滨城炒粿条) uses broad flat noodle to stir-fry with prawns, slices of fishcake, duck egg, bean sprouts and spring onions. The dish has a nice wok aroma, non-oily and delicious.

The Fried Mala Rice (麻辣炒饭) is wok-fried with egg, big fresh prawns, fishcake slices, spring onions, dark soy sauce and mala spices. It has a heavy, smoky aroma with nice mala flavours and just-nice spiciness. And the prawns are fat and crunchy. This tasty, spicy dish is a must-try for mala-lovers.

The “Ice-Fire” Polo Bun (冰火菠萝包) has warm crumbly egg crust on top of the bun and a slit through its side. A thick slice of cold butter is served separately. Put the savoury butter in the slit and the polo / pineapple bun is ready to eat. A delicious bun to try.

With a wide range of dishes, one can definitely find something delectable at Yi Jian Xiao Mian.
