Singapore Eat: 68 Cafe Traditional Breakfast @ Bukit Batok

68 Cafe is a relatively-new coffee place in Bukit Batok West Shopping Centre, right opposite Food Hub (大食汇). Despite being new, the cafe is already a popular hangout for early folks to have traditional kopi with local breakfast.

The little cafe serves various breakfast sets combining traditional kopi or teh, soft-boiled eggs and toasts / steamed bread with different types of spread, peanut porridge (their special recommendation), nasi lemak and otak-otak. Aside from butter-kaya / peanut as spreads for the toasts, there are tuna, sardines, egg mayo and cinnamon banana too. Mee Siam and mee rebus are new additions on their wall menu.

68 Cafe: Menu

First meal of the day, go for the Hainanese-style traditional breakfast set with kopi, butter-kaya toasts and soft-boiled eggs. Their kopi-O kosong has nice aroma and not bitter, so go easy on the sugar. The traditional butter-kaya toasts use brown breads that are grilled till crispy yet still retain some softness. The amount of butter and kaya are just nice without making it a sinfully-tasty breakfast.

The Peanut Porridge (花生粥) is a simple dish with fat peanuts and cuts of fried dough and the portion is quite big. The porridge is has a nice savoury flavour and not salty. This dish has been upgraded to Pumpkin Peanut Porridge — guess what is added?

There are two versions of nasi lemak (supplied by Chong Pang Nasi Lemak), one with fried fish and the other with egg crepe. Fried peanuts with ikan bilis and sambal chilli are common ingredients in both nasi lemak. Each packet is quite big and best to be consumed before 2pm. The grilled otak-otak is the broad type and has a nice aroma and sweet-spicy.

The Mee Rebus is served using yellow noodle with small cuts of tofu puff, beansprouts and a whole hard-boiled egg, drenched in a reddish gravy and garnished with coriander, green chilli and a lime for citrusy flavour. The hard-boiled egg is well-cooked without the yolk turning greyish. The gravy has just-nice viscosity, sweet-spicy and rich in flavours. It is delicious.

68 Cafe: Mee rebus

The Mee Siam is served using rice vermicelli with similar ingredients as the Mee Rebus but drenched in a light, reddish soup. The soup is sweet-savoury, non-spicy and the lime is a must for adding citrusy flavour to the dish. Aside from mee rebus, this is another nice dish to go for.

Wake up early and go for traditional local breakfast at 68 Cafe. Oh, their peanut porridge does run out fast even on weekdays.
