Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa (驰名结霜桥三轮车叻沙) began in 1956 selling laksa on a trishaw along Sungei Road and eventually became famous. The second generation of the founder later setup stalls in Hong Lim Market & Food Centre (Chinatown) and Yuhua Place Market & Food Centre (Jurong East), continuing to offer their widely-known “Trishaw Laksa”. While the two stalls inherited the same name, they are not branches of one another and offer their traditional laksa along different tracks.
Unlike the Michelin-awarded Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa at Hong Lim Food Centre with modified, fruity versions of the traditional dish, the Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa stall at Yuhua Place Food Centre continued on the traditional track, offering the old taste of their laksa alongside mee rebus and mee siam.

The large-size Laksa (叻沙) is served with thick rice vermicelli added with a whole hard-boiled egg, small cuts of tofu puffs, fishcake slices, bean sprouts and fresh cockles (optional) in coconut-milk-infused broth and garnished with laksa leaf powder. The cockles are lightly blanched so it is not raw and bloody, submerge them in the hot soup and they are nicely-done and fleshy. The curry broth is light, flavourful and easy to drink with mild-spiciness and mellow sweetness of coconut milk — sambal chilli can be added to further spice up the dish. It is truly a delightful dish with traditional taste.

The large-size Mee Siam (米暹) is served with thin rice vermicelli added with a hard-boiled egg, small cuts of tofu puffs and garnished with chopped coriander, crushed peanuts, and chilli paste (optional) — traditional style. The soup has well-balanced, smooth sour-sweet-savoury flavours, no harsh sourness that can induce choking, and mild spicy even with the chilli paste. A lime (self-service) adds a refreshing, citrusy touch to the dish.

The traditional taste of laksa and mee siam at Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa are really good and best for breakfast or as light meals at very affordable prices. I will go for their mee rebus next.
