Lor Mee 178 (卤面178), established in 2003, is a celebrated hawker stall in Tiong Bahru Market famous for its signature unique lor mee (braised-broth noodle) topped with crispy deep-fried shark meat nuggets. The stall has been recognised in the Singapore Michelin Guide since 2019 and highly regarded by many locals.

The small-size Lor Mee uses flat yellow noodle — which is the default unless other noodle types are specified — in thick braised gravy, with egg drop, and topped with one piece of deep-fried shark meat nugget, crispy fried bits, fried pork, pork slices and fishcake slices. Garnishes of minced garlic and coriander can be added as desired. The gooey braised gravy is less starchy, but not too fluid either, and has rich, balanced flavours without strong acidic taste notes of vinegar. The deep-fried batter of the fresh shark meat has nice flavour with a slight sweet note and is crispy and tasty — seriously, one piece is not enough. The fried pork and fried bits add more crispiness to the delicious dish.

Go for the large-size dish — which is of standard portion — for extra ingredients and three pieces of the crispy battered shark meat nuggets. And, this is really an enjoyable dish with more of the fried shark nuggets.
At times, when shark meat is not available, the stall may replace it with another type of fish meat. And, the deep-fried fish nuggets are similarly crispy and tasty too.

Lor Mee 178 sees frequent long queues and usually sold-out their lor mee before closing time. Therefore, go before lunch time.
On a side note, ever wonder the significance of “178”? It actually sounds like “yi qi fa” or “一起发” in Mandarin, meaning “get rich together”.
