Red Lantern Live Seafood (红灯笼菜馆), established since 2009, is a popular Singapore seafood and zi char chain with multiple outlets across Singapore offering Chinese cuisine in restaurants or as cooked dishes stalls in coffee shops. Their outlets usually feature aquariums with live fish, crabs, and lobsters, serving affordable signature dishes.
The main outlet, called Red Lantern Live Seafood Restaurant, is situated along Upper Bukit Timah Road, a stone’s throw from Bukit Panjang MRT and LRT stations. It is an air-conditioned restaurant with seafood dishes as its specialties above popular Chinese dishes.

Red Lantern has quite a wide range of seafood dishes, using live crabs, fishes and prawns from their aquariums. All the dishes look delicious on the menu — we were at the restaurant for Chinese New Year reunion lunch and really spoilt for choices.

For appetiser, there are braised peanuts and pickled papaya (腌木瓜). The pickled papaya is crunchy, not too sour and very nice. The dishes are as follows:
The Signature Golden Chicken (金牌手指鸡) has crispy, golden fried chicken double-cooked in a claypot with sweet-savoury sauce. The fried batter absorb the flavours of the sauce and other ingredients, including the claypot, giving the meat wonderful flavours. It is delicious!

The Herbal Wine Live Prawns (药膳云酒活虾堡) uses big, fresh, live prawns that are quick-cooked in rich, flavourful herbal broth with a wine flavour. This dish is definitely a must to try.

The Steamed Grouper (港蒸老虎斑) using fresh, fat grouper to steam and added with light garnishes is definitely a must have, especially during Chinese New Year.

Barbecue Pork Ribs with Red Wine (西班牙红酒烤骨). The pork ribs are marinated with red wine and grilled giving the tender meat a nice sweet, winey flavour.

The Western-style Shredded Egg Prawn Balls (西式蛋丝虾球) has deep-fried prawns and add with fried shredded egg with curry leaves. The prawns are big, fresh and crunchy and added with crispiness from the shredded egg.

Luo han zhai (罗汉上斋) — Buddha’s delight. This is a vegetarian dish.

Chinese spinach soup (上汤苋菜)

Last dish on the table is Seafood yee mee with black truffle (黑松露焖海鲜伊面). It is a simple noodle dish with prawns, squids, greens, etc, and nicely flavoured with subtle black truffle flavour.

And a free dessert of the day — subject to conditions and availability.

Red Lantern is a nice restaurant with great food and suitable for family outings or large group of people, especially during festive seasons.
