Xi Men Jie (西门街), established since 2005, is a popular Taiwanese restaurant chain in Singapore offering comforting Taiwanese street food and wholesome meals, like braised pork rice, oyster mee sua, fried rice and house-made bubble tea in casual, family-friendly dining environment. The brand has several outlets across Singapore with two in the west — one in Bukit Panjang and another in Westgate, Jurong East.

Xi Men Jie has quite a wide range of Taiwanese dishes on its menu, including Hakka specialties, like salt-baked chicken, abacus seeds, etc. Its signature mee sua dishes have various different toppings aside from oysters. There are series of egg fried rice, stewed / braised beef, soup noodle, street snacks, and desserts as well.

The Signature Beef Stew with Noodle (红烧牛肉关庙面) is a stewed beef dish, with potatoes and carrots, added onto Kuan Miao noodle — a Taiwanese specialty noodle that is usually sun-dried — and garnished with coriander. The beef are ultra-soft and tender after long hours of stewing and so are the potatoes and carrots. The savoury broth is rich and flavourful, and stick well to the soft, non-chewy noodle, giving every bite of the noodle a beefy flavour. It’s delicious!

The Black Fungus with Spicy Garlic Dressing (凉拌木耳), a cold appetiser dish, has quite a large amount of crunchy black fungi mixed with minced garlic, chilli, vinegar, soy sauce, spring onions, etc, that give the dish bright flavours with medium spiciness. It is a great dish to accompany any meals.

The Classic AI-Yu (经典爱玉冰) has aiyu jelly, a popular Taiwanese iced dessert, topped with taro balls, red bean and boba (波霸) — small black pearls, made with tapioca flour, commonly used in Taiwanese bubble tea. The firmer taro balls and soft boba give the soft jelly some chewiness and the soft, creamy red beans add its flavour. A unique dessert and nice alternative to cold drinks or caffeinated beverages.

I have yet to try Xi Men Jie’s Taiwanese-Hakka specialties and signature mee sua dishes. Will be back for more.
