Restoran Tangkak Beef (东甲牛腩面), as the name implies, originates from Tangkak District, in northern Johor. Its beef noodle is well-known in Malaysia and is hailed as one of the best beef noodles in Johor — probably in Malaysia too — using 100% fresh kampung beef. The outlet in Kluang used to be the closest to Singapore before new outlets are opened in Kulai and Johor Bahru.

Tangkak Beef’s signature dish is their classic beef noodle — used to be soup-based only but they added dry-styles in recent months. Apart from classic beef, there are mixes of beef brisket, cow’s stomach / tripe and tendon. Special dishes comprising tendons, beef balls, tenderloin and short ribs are also available. Non-beefy options include fishball noodle soup, spicy chicken rice, curry chicken rice, etc.

The Classic Beef Noodle (经典牛肉面), with kway teow, has generous amount of tender beef in delicious clear broth and garnished with minced pickled vegetable and spring onions. The sourness of the pickled vegetable adds a refreshing touch to the tasty and non-oily light-herbal broth, which are brewed with cow bones. The flavourful broth and tender meat makes this dish a must for beef-lovers.

The Classic Mixed Beef Noodle (经典牛腩面) comes with a mix of tender beef briskets, cow stomach and tripe. For normal size, it is a rather big bowl filled with most of the goodness. It is a dish to try most of the different beefy ingredients. There is an option for cow tendons too.

One of Tangkak Beef’s special dishes is the Single’s Short Ribs with Beef Balls (单人排骨牛丸). The single’s portion comes with two large meaty short ribs and two beef balls in the same beefy broth. The tender rib meat separates from the bone easily and the beef balls are surprisingly springy. Really love this!

Any noodle or rice ordered with the special dishes are served separately. The dry-style lai fun (or laksa noodle) in dark sauce is topped with lots of chopped spring onions, fried shallots and finely ground peanut. On its own, it has a mild sweet-savoury taste and will not “complicate” the flavour of the beef broth.

One item on Tangkak Beef’s menu stands out among others — their signature Claypot Short Ribs (特色砂煲排骨) for 2 pax — I tried it at Tangkak Beef @ Taman Sentosa in Johor Bahru. I have also visited the original outlet of Tangkak Beef in Tangkak District, Johor.

Read: Tangkak Eat: Restoran Kuang Fei / Original Tangkak Beef (东甲牛腩面)
