Restoran Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Teh (顺顺兴肉骨茶) is located along a row of shops directly opposite KSL City Mall‘s basement exit in Taman Century and cannot be missed. Soon Soon Heng’s Malaysia-style claypot bak kut teh (or pork ribs soup) is very popular among Singaporeans and locals — do expect to queue most of the time.
Like most bak kut teh restaurants in Johor Bahru, Soon Soon Heng’s bak kut teh is customisable, allowing additional ingredients to be boiled in the light-herbal, pig-bone broth. Customers can add pig offals, pig tendons, tofu skins, enoki mushrooms, button mushrooms, pacific clams, etc — each item charged separately. Unless otherwise specified, pork belly meat may be added with tender pork ribs as standard ingredients — do ask for pork ribs only if you don’t want any pork belly meat, but may cost more.
Bak kut teh is best consumed when there are more people in a group to go for more dishes. Aside from bak kut teh with added ingredients in the same claypot, side dishes such as you tiao (fried dough fritters), braised peanuts, preserved mustards, braised tofu, etc, can also be added to make a sumptuous meal. Traditionally, a serving of cut dough fritters is the best companion to bak kut teh.
Soon Soon Heng Bak Kut Teh is a great place to go for Malaysia-style bak kut teh when shopping in KSL City Mall. To try the original taste of their pork ribs soup with claypot flavour, don’t add other ingredients into the soup, order separate side dishes instead.
