Kedai Makanan Ah Hua Kueh Teow (亚华粿条) — or “Ah Hua Kway Teow” to those who don’t use its actual name on the signboard — is located just a stone’s throw from KSL City Mall in Taman Abad (Taman Century). The restaurant has been serving its signature kway teow (dry / soup) dishes, using a traditional recipe that has been passed down, since 1950.
Ah Hua’s menu is pasted on the wall. By default, kway teow (flat rice noodle) will be used for all noodle dishes unless otherwise specified. For dry-style dishes, a sauce can be selected from an option of three — black sauce, chilli paste or vinegar — for tossing with the noodle. The ingredients will vary depending on the selected size of the noodle dish — larger sizes will have more ingredients and slightly more noodle. And they have a single snack named Golden Fishcake (黄金鱼饼) — must be good.
The medium-size, soup-style Kuey Teow is served with many ingredients that include sliced lean meat, minced pork, sliced faux abalone, fishballs, pig liver, pig kidney, greens, seaweed and crispy fried pork lard. The fresh ingredients and flavourful broth, from boiling all the ingredients, makes the kuey teow soup a delicious noodle dish.
The small-size, dry-style Kuey Teow, with black soy sauce, is topped with sliced lean meat, minced meat, pig liver and crispy fried pork lard on the noodle. The accompanying soup has seaweed, greens and fishballs. The black sauce gives the kuey teow dish a different taste experience from the soup version.
Ah Hua’s dry-style noodle can also be tossed with chilli paste or vinegar. I will try them in subsequent visits and their Golden Fishcake too.
