Restoran Ya Wang (鸭皇药材烧腊大王) is a well-known restaurant popular for its herbal roasted duck and other roasted delights. The restaurant is located in Bandar Johor Bahru, a short walking distance from JB City Square Shopping Centre / JB CIQ.
Ya Wang’s signature dishes are their herbal roasted ducks with either Angelica herb (当归烧鸭), wild ginseng (泡参烧鸭) or ten-wonder herbs (十全烧鸭). There is non-herbal pipa roasted duck (琵琶烧鸭) too. The restaurant also serves other roasted delights, such as roasted pork, suckling pig, char siew (barbecue pork), roasted chicken, braised duck, soups and vegetable dishes.
A complete meal at Ya Wang usually comprises of a roasted duck dish, roasted pork, a vegetable dish and herbal soup — for 2 or 3 pax. The roasted pork was crispy and slightly on the salty side — which is typical of heavily-roasted roasted pork.
The Angelica herbal roasted duck (thigh meat) is very tender with crispy skin. The meat carries a light herbal taste and is complimented by its sauce, which has a rich herbal aroma and taste.
There is no standard dishes pairing herbal roasted duck with rice / noodle / oil rice. One solution will be to order the desired portion of herbal roasted duck as a dish on its own and add a rice / noodle / oil rice separately.
The Roasted Duck Drumstick Noodle (烤鸭腿面) is a standard dish where pipa roasted duck meat is served with thin egg noodle and greens. The noodle, tossed in a mild-savoury dark sauce, is springy and has nice texture. The pipa roasted duck has similar crispy skin with tender meat and very nicely-roasted.
For single diner, a rice / noodle dish with roasted duck and roasted pork is one way to go for two of their roasty specialties.
