Palates & Bagels by The Awesome Mankind (T.A.M) is a popular Halal-certified cafe situated along Jalan Dhoby, near Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk in Johor Bahru. The cafe specialises in creative, artisanal bagels and Asian fusion dishes and unique beverages too.

The two-storey cafe is known for its rustic ambiance with a triangular balcony on the second level and behind an opened “hole” in the wall. Its interior utilises unfinished walls, wooden floorings and stairway, and rustic tables. On the bar counter at the ground floor, different types of bagel are displayed for selection — their bagels are pretty big. A glass shelf displayed the cafe’s range of delicious-looking pastries.

Other than plain and parmesan cheese bagels that are usually available everyday, the flavoured bagels of the day may differ. On my last visit, there are flavours of pumpkin seed, sesame seed, pickled chilli and cranberry.

On the menu, a list of dishes under Savoury Bagel, with male and female names like “Ah Lian”, “Ah Seng”, etc , can be paired with choice of bagel from either plain, flavoured or parmesan cheese bagels. There are pastas, rice bowls and finger food as well. Not to be missed are the cafe’s list of special coffees and non-coffee beverages.

The “Louis” savoury bagel — with choice of pickled chilli bagel — is served with smokey beef brisket, cheese, hash brown, egg, cajun mayo and caramelised onion. The pulled beef has a smokey aroma, tender and great flavour. The hearty bagel meal is a great experience with unforgettable smokey flavour from the pulled beef.

The Unagi Rice Bowl is served with grilled unagi (freshwater eel) with sweet sauce, picked ginger, salad, poached egg and bonito flakes on Dashi Japanese rice. Meshing and mixing the poached egg with the rice smoothen and flavoured the whole dish with creamy, sweet eggy flavour. It is really yummy with tender unagi and mild-sweet flavours.

For beverages, the iced Osmanthus Latte and Osmanthus Pear Sparkling Oolong are new, unique experience and presented beautifully. The osmanthus flavour is undeniably distinctive yet not overpowering the flavours of coffee and oolong tea. The rose-flavoured chocolate has a special taste and, again, a different experience. An afternoon tea session is a great way to get out of the heat, relax in the cafe and enjoy these special drinks with pastries.

Palates & Bagels @ Jalan Dhoby is the flagship outlet and has a local Malaysian theme. It opened its second outlet in Taman Melodies with a “Melodies of Thai” concept — I have yet to visit it yet — and a third Japanese-infused concept cafe in AEON Mall Bukit Indah.
