Yee Siang Confectionery (億香槟城饼家), is a traditional bakery located behind Plaza Sentosa (scheduled for re-development) in Taman Sentosa. The confectionery, which hails from Penang, bakes traditional pastries like mooncakes, mung bean biscuit (tau sar piah), wife biscuits, etc.
During Mid-Autumn festive seasons, Yee Siang will make a wide variety of traditional mooncakes of different styles and flavours, including Shanghai mooncakes with lotus filling. Their signature item is freshly-baked yam mooncakes, with or without single salted egg yolks.
The Yam Mooncakes (芋泥月饼), in flaky layered crust, have authentic yam taste — real yam is never too strong in flavour nor bright purple in colour. The mooncake is really good, has authentic taste and very low in sweetness. For best texture, heat up the mooncakes slightly in an oven before eating. The flaky crust becomes crispier and the lightly warmed mooncake tastes even better with softer yam-paste filling.
Yee Siang has also introduced Sweet Potato Mooncake using purple sweet potato in place of yam. This mooncake does have bright purplish filling with / without salted egg yolk.
The durian-flavoured traditional mooncake (榴莲月饼) has smooth filling of durian and lotus paste with lotus seeds giving the mooncake a mellow durian flavour without overly-strong durian aroma and mild sweet. It offers a different experience and I like the taste — it tastes more like mooncake than durian.
Yee Siang has 5 flavours of wife biscuit (老婆饼) — get a box of 6 with any flavours and get RM1 off.
From top in clockwise direction: The savoury wife biscuit (咸) contains mild-salty mung bean paste. The red bean wife biscuit (红豆沙) contains red bean paste. The classic wife biscuit (unmarked) has soft candied winter melon paste with white sesame seeds. The sweet wife biscuit (甜) has a sugary filling and not too sweet. The dual-flavour wife biscuit (双品) contains both savoury mung bean paste and sweet red bean paste, giving a sweet-savoury flavour.
The different wife biscuits have distinct flavours respectively and of very low sweetness. The dual-flavour wife biscuit is unique and must-try.
Yee Siang’s traditional mooncakes, especially their yam mooncakes, are not to be missed during Mid-Autumn. Outside festive seasons, go for their traditional pastries.
