Ming Ang Confectionery (明安特产专卖店) is one of my favourite shops to get traditional pastries from Johor Bahru. The traditional confectionery chain, established since 1992, has its headquarters in Yong Peng with several Johor Bahru branches inside / near major shopping malls close to Singapore — such as Taman Century (opposite KSL City), Bukit Indah, JB City Square, etc.
I usually patronise the Taman Century outlet since I often hunt for eating places around KSL City Mall. The newer outlet in JB City Square, near JB CIQ, is a convenient alternative.

Ming Ang’s most popular signature product is their self-baked beh teh saw / heong peah (马蹄酥 / 香饼) — or fragrant pastries — with original and mocha versions (8 pcs/pack). The heong peahs are so fast-selling that customers are usually buying freshly-baked hot pastries from Ming Ang’s outlets with bakeries, especially on weekends.
The original Heong Peah (芝麻香饼) is crispy and flaky with soft maltose filling that does not harden over time. It is not too sweet and with roasty sesame seed flavour. The Mocha Heong Peah (摩卡香饼) has similar crust with mocha filling that has rich mocha flavour. I can eat a couple of both heong peah a time without feeling sinful.

The Char Siu Sao Pao (烧包) has crispy layered crust and nice aroma — especially after re-heating in an air-fryer for about 5 minutes — and the portion of the char siu chicken filling is well-balanced with the crust and not too crusty. The pao (bun) has nice flavours and not too sweet.

The Wife Cake (老婆饼) has thin, layered, flaky crusts with white sesame seeds and the proportion of the winter melon filling to crust is well-balanced. The soft filling is of low sweetness and contains small bits of winter melon and roasted sesame seeds that adds crunchy texture — you just have to try it to know what I mean.

Top-left: Another signature product of Ming Ang is their Creamy Milk Biscuit (奶香酥饼). The sweet, milk-fragrant biscuit is innovated from the classic Chinese shortbread with oozy caramelised sugar filling — a fusion of Chinese pastry and western cream. Despite it being a sweet pastry, the sweetness is just nice.
Top-right: Another version of the Creamy Milk Biscuit is the Choco Milk Biscuit with rich cocoa filling in similar layered crust. Infused with cocoa, the crust is crispier and the chocolate filling has just-nice sweetness too.
Bottom-left: The Signature Spicy Chicken Floss Puff has similar crispy, flaky layered crust but in an elongated shape. The chunk of chicken floss filling contributes its sweet-savoury flavour to the puff with a subtle note of spiciness.
Bottom-right: The Premium Blueberry Pie is a unique pastry of Ming Ang. The shortcrust pastry is filled mostly with blueberry fruits, rather than just blueberry jam, that give off natural sweetness of blueberries as they burst in the mouth.

Ming Ang’s tau sah peah or Mung Bean Biscuit (豆沙饼) is another hot-seller. Unlike other mung bean biscuits that I have tried before, the freshly-baked tau sah peah has crispy layered crust and filled with sweet-savoury mung bean paste with a little saltiness — it is like combining a sweet tau sah peah and a savoury tau sah peah into one. It tastes so good that I usually can’t stop at just one piece.

There are various flavours of tambun biscuits (淡文饼), kaya puffs and other pastries too. During festive seasons, seasonal pastries, such as pineapple tarts, cookies, mooncakes, etc, will also be rolled out. Apart from freshly-baked pastries, Ming Ang also carries local products from other parts of Malaysia.
