Johor Bahru Cafe: My Liberica Cafe Specialty Coffee From Seed to Cup @ Nusa Bestari

My Liberica is a pioneering Malaysian coffee company renowned for rescuing the rare and endangered Liberica coffee bean (also called “elephant” beans) — which accounts for less than 1% of the world’s coffee production. Operating on a strict “seed-to-cup” philosophy, they handle all farming, processing, and roasting themselves at their estate in Kulai / Simpang Renggam, Johor.

Known for transforming the rustic, local Liberica bean into highly sought-after specialty coffee. My Liberica’s beans have helped Malaysian baristas score top finishes at the prestigious World Barista Championships. Their Liberica specialty coffees are served through their cafes in Johor Bahru, such as Taman Molek and Taman Nusa Bestari (near Bukit Indah).

Grown at low altitudes in Malaysia’s humid climate, Liberica boasts a unique flavour unlike Arabica and Robusta. Liberica coffee is bolder, fuller-bodied with juicy, fruit-forward notes like jackfruit and berries, rounded out by deep chocolate sweetness.

The Honey Almond hand-brew coffee has that familiar Liberica beans taste notes that I am used to — nutty (or roasted almond), sweet (or honey), slight bitter-sweetness (dark chocolate after-taste) and full body. The flavours of “Full City Roast”, or medium-dark roast, are lighter and more distinct than those dark-roasted Liberica beans that I have tried.

The Hokkaido Chocolate Crepe Cake is one of the best crepe cakes that I have ever tried. Unlike many crepe cakes that emphasise softness with varying flavours, this cake has crunchy textures from the chocolate flakes and small beads hidden between the layers of crepe and light cream. It is not too sweet nor over-chocolaty and nice to go with coffee, especially Liberica coffee with similar bitter-sweet flavours.

My Liberica’s series of roasted Liberica specialty coffee beans from their plantation — Jackfruit, Honey Almond, Classic Blend, Signature Blend, etc, and the premium World Champion Inspiration — are available for sales through the cafes. As a start, I picked a bag of Honey Almond (which I tasted) and another bag of Classic Blend (dark-roasted and slightly more bitter) coffee beans for self-brewing and will try the others on subsequent visits.

My Liberica Cafe is a nice spot to chill, sip coffee, enjoy a cake and waste the afternoon away, especially on a weekday. And their homegrown Liberica coffee beans are one of my sources for self-brewing coffee at home.
