Singapore Eat: Hong Man Tian Mala Hotpot (红满天.麻辣香锅) @ Bukit Batok

Hong Man Tian Mala Hotpot (红满天麻辣香锅) is a Chinese-food stall located in Foodgle Hub (福哥) below Block 451 in Bukit Batok West. The stall specialises in fragrant, spicy Chinese-style dishes like mala hotpot (麻辣香锅) and grilled fish (烤鱼) as its signature dishes and a range of popular cooked dishes, including sour vegetable fish (酸菜鱼), spicy chicken (辣子鸡), spicy beancurd (麻婆豆腐), cumin beef (孜然牛肉), double cooked meat (回锅肉), etc.

My selected ingredients for the Mala Hotpot (麻辣香锅) — minimum S$6 — are skilfully stir-fried with mala condiments and added with peanuts, spring onion and white sesame seeds. The finished dish has a nice fragrance and without the choking aroma of spicy chilli — I picked medium for spiciness level as usual. The meats are well-cooked till tender and the spiciness level is just-nice for me with subtle peppercorn flavour. It is tasty, non-oily and the peanuts give the dish some crunchy texture in addition to the crunchy beef tripe that I picked.

The Boiled Slice Beef (水煮牛肉) — available with pork and fish slices too — is a big dish enough for 2~3 pax. Similarly, it has a nice fragrance when served. The amount of beef slices are quite a lot and they are coated in cornstarch to prevent overcooking, thus retaining their tenderness in the hot, spicy “soup” — default spiciness is about medium level, but the hot oil makes it spicier. Underneath the beef slices are more ingredients, such as the flat-noodle-like tofu skin, cabbage, pak choy, soy bean sprouts, shredded kelp and black fungus. This hot, spicy and delicious dish is another hot-seller of Hong Man Tian.

Hint: I knew beforehand I would not be able to finish it, so I brought along a food container and packed the remainder for my next meal — about 1/3 of it since I ate about 2 persons’ share. This big dish at $12.80 is really worth it.

I love the spicy dishes that I tried at Hong Man Tian so far and will go for the remaining dishes they offer, which are popular Chinese delicacies and most of them are my favourites.
