Pasar Awam Pontian (Pontian Public Market / Pontian Wholesale Fish Market) is a great place to buy fresh seafood that are catches from nearby Kukup Fishing Village. And the best thing to do after buying fresh seafood will be to cook them immediately.
Ah Huat Kitchen (亚发代炒), located in Kedai Kopi Seng (锦成茶餐室) amidst a row of shophouses just opposite the fish market, is one of the best places to have the just-purchased seafood cooked on your behalf — you buy the seafood, Ah Huat Kitchen will cook for you and you enjoy the cooked seafood dishes — that is Ah Huat’s slogan.

Depending on the size or quantity of the purchased seafood and how they will be cooked, prices may vary. Of course, the more tedious the cooking methods and additional ingredients, like meat, veggies, garlic, ginger, etc, provided by the stall will cost a little more. But, on the whole, the overall cost will still be cheaper than seafood restaurants as you are the one to source your own fresh seafood.

Some dishes that we have tried include squids in black squid ink, steamed pomfret, chilli clams and salted egg prawns (see photos above). On another visit, we have squids with squid ink again (but the squids we bought had not much of the sweet, black ink), fried chilli prawns, deep-fried fish and another steamed fish. Fresh fishes are always best when steamed but when there more fishes, try another cooking style.

The cook-on-behalf concept by Ah Huat Kitchen is a great option to go for when in Pontian. You will pick the fresh seafood yourself and let the cooks do what they do best. Furthermore, additional meat, vegetable, noodle dishes can also be ordered from Ah Huat Kitchen to complement the seafood dishes.
