Singapore Eat: Hello Western Food & Fried Snacks @ Bukit Batok

A Halal-certified food stall in Mei De Coffeeshop (美德咖啡店), in Bukit Batok East, goes simply by the name “Hello” and it serves primarily fried chicken (spring chicken, fried wing, fried drumstick, etc) with fries / rice, Western food (chicken chop, chicken cutlet, fish & chips, burger) and fried snacks (curry puffs, fried dough, etc). Among the list of fried stuffs and Western fried dishes are two popular Malay dishes — lontong and mee siam.

Hello Western Food @ Bukit Batok East

Hello’s Mee Siam is quite a big dish with stir-fried rice vermicelli in light gravy with strips of tofu puff, sliced hard-boiled egg, spring onions, a lime and sambal chilli (optional). The sweet-citrusy gravy (added with lime juice) is mildly spicy and the sambal chilli adds more flavours and sweetness rather than spiciness. It is a delightful dish with not-so-common flavours of spring onions.

Pairing no-meat mee siam with a Fried Chicken Drumstick is a good way to try their fried chicken without overeating. The fried chicken is nicely deep-fried with crispy, non-salty batter and the meat inside is tender and juicy — does not feel thirsty after eating.

Hello Western Food: Mee Siam + Fried Chicken Drumstick

The Chicken Chop is served with pan-fried chicken thigh meat under a light savoury sauce, crispy fries and sides of baked beans, coleslaw and slices of fresh tomato and cucumber. The chicken meat and potato fries are fried slightly longer that induced slight toasty flavours and crispiness on the outer surface but still tender inside. The fries are not salted which keeps the whole dish low in salt.

Hello Western Food: Chicken Chop

Hello’s curry puffs are quite big. The Potato Curry Puff has crispy crust with a filling comprising of chicken meat, hard-boiled egg and mashed potato in curry paste. It has distinct curry flavour and non-spicy. The Sardine Puff has similar crispy crust and marked with a red dot. Enclosed in the crust are chunks of sardine meat with shreds of shallot. It has a distinctive spice flavour with mellow spiciness and sweetness of shallots.

Hello’s fried chicken and Western food are great dishes to try and their curry puffs and mee siam are not to miss too. I will go for the lontong next.
