Chaozhou Eat: Li Yuan Teochew Snacks (立元潮州小吃)

Li Yuan Teochew Snacks (立元潮州小吃) specialises in popular, traditional Teochew snacks. It shares the same restaurant space as A-Hao Xikou Goose Meat Shop (溪口阿浩鹅肉店) under the name Li Yuan (立元) and is located near to Memorial Temple of Han Yu (韩文公祠, or Han Wengong Shrine).

The restaurant is a great place to go for Chaozhou / Teochew specialty dishes such as goose meat rice / platter, beef ball noodle / soup, and also Teochew’s traditional snacks — we had traditional snacks in place of rice to go with goose meat platter.

On Li Yuan’s menu (right), there are signature items such as Teochew peach-shaped png kueh (红桃粿), no-rice kueh (无米粿) and savoury chwee kueh (咸水粿). Other Teochew-specialties include carrot kueh (菜头粿), yam kueh (芋头粿), chive dumplings (韭菜饺) and spring rolls (春饼). There are fresh sugarcane drinks too.

The Savoury Chwee Kueh (咸水粿) is very similar to Singapore-style chwee kueh except that the white rice cake has firmer and chewier texture. There is also a depression to hold the sweet-savoury stir-fried diced preserved radish — in Singapore, the step to make the depression is skipped and the garnish is simply added on top of the rice cake. The savoury chwee kueh is not very salty and suitable as substitute for rice / noodle.

After trying the Teochew snack, I can say that I prefer the firmer chwee kueh with more rice flour content than many softer ones in Singapore.

The No-Rice Kueh / Bo Bi Kueh (无米粿), 3 pcs / half-serving, is a traditional savoury pastry that uses no rice / rice flour, thus its name “no-rice”. Its skin is made from sweet potato flour / tapioca starch to give a translucent, chewy and tender texture and filled with savoury mung bean paste. In Chaozhou, no-rice kuehs are usually pan-fried to enhance texture and add flavours. The kuehs are recommended to go with some chilli for more flavours rather than spiciness.

We had a really good meal at Li Yuan with goose meat from A-Hao Xikou Goose Meat Shop and traditional snacks, from Li Yuan Teochew Snacks, as replacement for rice and to try more Teochew specialties. Check out the restaurant when visiting Guangji Bridge (广济桥) and/or Memorial Temple of Han Yu (韩文公祠).
