Ah Ma TeoChew Kuih (阿嬷潮州糕), a popular cafe chain with a number of outlets in Johor Bahru, are great places to go for traditional Teochew kuihs (bite-size cakes, dumplings, biscuits or pastries), Hokkien kuihs, Malay kuihs, Nyonya kuihs, desserts, special coffees and popular Malaysian delights.

Aside from eating-in at the cafes, Ah Ma’s traditional kuihs, rice dumplings (seasonal) and homemade condiments can be purchased from push-carts outside the cafes, or from standalone kiosks in major shopping malls, as take-aways. The kiosks can be found in Paradigm Mall (JB), KSL City Mall, AEON Mall Bukit Indah, AEON Mall Permas Jaya and the new SKS City Mall — very convenient!

All traditional kuihs, yam kuih, ang ku kuihs (红龟粿), chai kuihs (菜板), png kuih (潮州饭桃粿), etc, are sold at the push-carts and kiosks. There are fried puffs, gula Melaka steamed cake, orange butter cake and banana cake too.

The traditional kuihs are sold either as 5 pieces of single flavour in a box or mix-and-match to have 5 pieces out of all the flavours offered. When purchasing the blue pulut tai tai (蓝花饭) that has very low sweetness, a pack of Ah Ma’s kaya will be included for eating with the kuih. Yellow-skin ang ku kuih with different fillings (minced peanut, mung bean paste or grated coconut) and fried puffs, such as red bean puff, curry puff, kaya puff, etc, are also available.

The Teochew peach-shape png kuih (潮州饭桃粿) and yam peach-kuih (潮州芋头桃粿) with savoury fillings are nice for breakfast or as light meals. The gula Melaka steamed cake (马来糕) is soft, spongy and has nice gula Melaka (palm sugar) aroma, and mild-sweet. The banana cake (香蕉蛋糕) is soft and fluffy with nice banana aroma and flavour. The orange butter cake (鲜橙牛油蛋糕) has a mellow tangy aroma and flavour.

Aside from traditional pastries, Ah Ma’s handmade chilli sauce, sambal chilli, fried shallots and kaya (coconut jam) are available for sales in small jars or packets.
Left: Ah Ma Chilli Sauce / SOS Chilli (阿嬷辣椒酱) is made using several ingredients, including torch ginger flower, to give it a citrusy-sweet-spicy flavour — a little on the spicier side. It is a great condiment to have as dipping sauce for many dishes and snacks.
Top-right: Ah Ma Hometown Sambal Chilli (阿嬷家乡叁巴) is thicker than the chilli sauce offering richer flavours from a number of ingredients and on the spicier side too.
Bottom-right: The handmade Ah Ma Kaya (阿嬷咖央) is thick with a nice aroma and low in sweetness.

Ah Ma’s signature Teochew rice dumplings are available during the annual Dragon Boat Festival. The savoury dumpling has tender chicken thigh meat, shiitake mushroom, salted egg yolk, chestnut and peanuts in sticky glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. It is nice to go with the lighter Ah Ma Chilli Sauce or the Sambal Chilli for heavier flavours.

When shopping for confections in Johor Bahru, Ah Ma TeoChew Kuih offers more options with their traditional kuihs, cakes and homemade condiments. It is always great to try something different each time.
