For coffee-lovers who love Nanyang traditional coffee, Kluang Coffee Powder Factory (居銮咖啡) is a must-visit when in Kluang of Johor. Apart from being a factory where coffee beans are processed into coffee powder, it also housed a retail section, featuring its own products, and a cafe for visitors to relax and try Kluang coffee.
Kluang Coffee’s product is packaged under the brand “Cap Televisyen”, which means “Television Brand”, since 1966.

A monument at the entrance proclaims Kluang Coffee as “the best coffee in town” — it is, as most coffee shops in Kluang use their traditional coffee. An old-fashion television sits in the factory as a real-life symbol of their “Cap Televisyen” brand.
In the retail section, a wide range of coffee products are laid out neatly on shelves. Various types of coffee ranging from instant coffees, traditional kopi powder to roasted coffee beans and Western-style coffees are available.

In a corner, the main varietals of coffee beans are displayed in large glass bottles with some notes on them. Arabica, Robusta and Liberica beans are placed side-by-side for easy comparisons, especially their shapes and sizes. Nanyang traditional coffees are usually pre-mixed with sugar, salt / margarine and are known as “black coffee” due to the colour of caramelised sugar. “Pure coffee” are roasted beans that are not mixed with anything. On a side note, “white coffee” is pre-mixed with margarine without sugar.

Kluang Coffee is one of the few spots in Johor that sells the locally-grown, large-seed, single-origin Liberica beans (also known as “elephant beans”), which has a rich and nutty (or “woody”) taste profile after roasting. Traditional coffee made from pure or blends of Liberica beans exhibit a unique aroma and usually priced more than Robusta-made coffee.
Aside from freshly-roasted 100% Liberica and 100% Arabica in beans form or powder, Kluang Coffee also offer their “3 Beans Recipe” coffee which features a special blend of Arabica, Robusta and Liberica beans.

Used to be called “Brew 1966”, The Kopi Factory cafe, located next to the retail section, offers visitors the convenience of tasting the factory-produced coffee with some light bites. Try the traditional kopi with some free-serving cream crackers, it is the old-school way to have coffee in the old days. Other than traditional kopi, Western-style coffee, like cappuccino, lattes, etc, and affogato are also available.

By the way, Kluang Coffee has another retail outlet in Johbase City Square, along Jalan Wayang, and much closer to Kluang town centre — On the Road Cafe is just few units away. The outlet offers the full range of coffee products as the main factory.

When in Kluang, visit Kluang Coffee Powder Factory and bring home some coffee beans or powder, especially the Liberica beans, which accounts for less than 2% of the world’s commercially-grown coffee — isn’t it wonderful to have one of the rarest coffee beans sitting at our doorsteps?
