Beauty World Niang Re Gao (美世界娘惹糕) is a long-standing kueh stall in Beauty World Centre for as long as I can remember. Used to occupy a stall inside the 4th-level foodcourt, it shifted out to the bigger stall it currently occupied, near the lift. The stall offers a wide range of kuehs, including Nyonya kuehs, ang ku kuehs, png kuehs, yam cake, Chinese pastries, traditional cookies, rice dumplings, mooncakes (during Mid-Autumn Festival), etc.

Top-left: The classic Ang Ku Kueh (红龟粿) has two types of filling — sweet mung bean paste or crushed peanut paste. The red skin is made with glutinous rice flour and mashed sweet potato.
Top-right: The greyish ang ku kueh contains savoury mung bean paste and the skin is the natural colour of the ingredients used — typically black sesame with glutinous rice flour.
Bottom-right: The taro ang ku kueh has purplish skin made with glutinous rice and taro and filled with sweet mung bean paste. The taro gives the kueh its mellow flavour.
Bottom-left: The white Hainanese Coconut Kueh or Yi Bua (海南薏粑粿) has mochi-like skin (made with glutinous rice flour too) and filled with grated coconut with palm sugar and crushed peanuts, etc, and has a slight gingerly flavour.

The stall sells 2 types of turnip-made kueh — left is mang guang kueh (芒光粿) and right is soon kueh (笋粿). Soon kueh means “bamboo shoot dumpling” where shreds of bamboo shoot were used as key ingredient traditionally, but due to its higher cost in Singapore, turnip (沙葛, a.k.a. jicama) is usually used as replacement. Other than the use of turnip as main ingredients, both kuehs have different skins, wrapping methods and fillings.
The mang guang kueh is wrapped like a dumpling in whitish skin and filled with shreds of turnip, carrot and mushroom. It is also decorated with bits of scallion and chilli. The curry puff-like soon kueh has yellowish skin and filled with turnip, mushroom and dried shrimp. Both offers different flavours and textures.

Beauty World Niang Re Gao has so many traditional pastries to offer and I always pick one or two items for next day’s breakfast on each visit.
