Braised pig leg rice (猪脚饭) is a local dish in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong (广东.潮汕). It originated in Longjiang Town, Huilai County, Jieyang City, and is also known as “Longjiang pig leg rice (隆江猪脚饭)” — but often translated as “Longjiang pig trotter rice”. The dish typically consists of braised pig trotter / pig knuckle and side dishes on rice. In Southern China, “pig leg” comprises of both pig knuckle (meaty hock above the foot) and pig trotter (foot).
Na Jie (Sister Na) Longjiang Pig Leg Rice (娜姐隆江猪脚饭), as its name implies, is a restaurant that serves the Longjiang-style Pig Leg Rice as its signatures. It is located a stone’s throw from Borrman Hotel (柏曼酒店) near Chaozhou Ancient City and Paifang Street.

Aside from pig trotter / pig knuckle rice bowls (猪脚饭 / 猪蹄饭), Na Jie serves other similar rice bowls with different meat, such as pork roll, roasted duck, chicken chop, steamed chicken, braised intestine, barbecue pork, etc. Meat platters (with two or three selection of meats), braised egg and stir-fried vegetable are also available. On the menu, the photo of the “Four Touches of Gold Rice (四点金饭)” features pig trotter with thick, soft skin in a rice bowl.

The medium-size Pig Leg Rice (猪脚饭) is served with leaner pig knuckle meat with not-too-fat gelatinous skin — self-selected — on rice with half a braised egg, stir-fried cabbage, beansprouts and preserved mustard and a bowl of light savoury soup. The meat is tender with gelatinous skin and rich braised flavour that is sweet-savoury. The vegetable sides are delicious too, making the rice bowls delightful dishes to go for.
It is not obvious in the photo but the portion of the rice dish is quite large — we forgot that servings in China are usually of bigger portion than in other regions and should always go for small-size when not sharing.

The medium-size Roasted Duck Rice (烧鸭饭) has a really big portion of roasted duck thigh meat on rice with similar sides as the pig knuckle rice. The roasted duck has crispy skin and tender meat with nice roasty flavour. It offers different texture to the softer pig leg meat.
We learnt later that while goose meat holds an esteemed, culinary position in Chaoshan cuisine, chicken and duck meats are regarded as very common and tends to be very much cheaper — their serving portions tend to be larger too.

Na Jie’s restaurant is a great find to have simpler meals and to try the Longjiang-style Pig Trotter Rice, another Chaoshan specialty that should not be missed when in Chaozhou City.
