Johor Bahru Eat: Tai Hong Kopitiam (大丰擂茶) Thunder Tea Rice @ Taman Sentosa

Tai Hong Kopitiam (大丰擂茶) is a rather big kopitiam located in Taman Sentosa, of Johor Bahru, right opposite Plaza Sentosa (scheduled for re-development) and very near to Niu Mo Wang Beef Noodles (牛魔王牛肉面). Tai Hong Kopitiam’s Chinese name is “大丰擂茶”, which stands for Sentosa (大丰) and “thunder” tea rice / ham cha / lei cha (擂茶). That means the Sentosa outlet is the main outlet and “thunder” tea rice is their signature dish among a wide range of other dishes.

Aside from Hakka-style ham cha / lei cha (客家擂茶), or commonly translated as the “thunder” tea rice, Tai Hong Kopitiam serves a long list of Malaysian local delights. There are traditional toasts, nasi lemak, curry dishes, numerous noodle and rice dishes, Hakka yong tau foo (客家酿豆腐), etc.

Tai Hong offers promotion sets during breakfast hours from 7:30am to 11am and afternoon tea time from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. A display of 10 dishes on a wall near the entrance highlights the signature / top picks of the restaurant.

It is a must to try Tai Hong’s signature “thunder” tea rice when visiting the kopitiam. The ground tea soup is not bitter and has a pleasant taste that goes well with the bowl of plain or brown rice that is topped with various minced greens, peanuts, fried beancurd and fried shallots. It is delicious and a must-try! Add-on some Hakka yong tau foo as side dish to go with the rice dish.

Tai Hong’s Hakka yong tau foo (客家酿豆腐) can be ordered from the menu or self-picked from the trays near the bar counter. The selected items will be added with a special sauce before serving. They are wonderful as tasty side dishes to accompany any main dishes.

Tai Hong’s Sarawak Kolo Mee (哥罗面) is a delicious dish with curly egg noodles in white sauce made with fragrant shallot oil, lard oil, etc. The dry noodle dish is topped with slices of barbecue pork, minced pork with mushrooms and garnished with fried shallots and chopped spring onions. Meat dumplings are added in the soup that accompany the noodle dish. It is aromatic and tasty — I like this so much that I have eaten it many times.

The Mee Siam Fried Chicken Meat (米暹炸鸡腿肉快) is dry-style fried rice vermicelli added with fried beancurd, fishcake, shredded eggs, beansprouts and crispy chicken meat deep-fried with curry leaves. The sweet-savoury noodle is accompanied by sweet-spicy nasi lemak sambal chilli that consists of crispy fried anchovies and citrusy lime. It is a flavourful and delicious dish to go for.
