“Sheng Ji Wanton Noodle” — the official name is Jie Sheng Mee Soup (笙记云吞面之家) as printed on their signboard — is a restaurant located in the residential estate along Jalan Keris 1 in Taman Sri Tebrau (a.k.a. Dai Mah Garden / 大马花园), in Johor Bahru. From a small home business that specialises in traditional-taste wanton noodle, it has grown into a full-fledge restaurant.
Aside from wanton noodle with either white / black sauce, Jie Sheng also offers main dishes, such as dumpling noodle soup, fishball noodle, Vietnamese pork chop rice, curry chicken with rice / noodle, and side dishes like beef balls soup, otak-otak, yong tau foo (酿豆腐), fried wantons, etc. And, they added bak kut teh (肉骨茶) recently. There are beverages too, including traditional Nanyang kopi and Vietnamese coffee.

The Traditional Wanton Noodle (古早味云吞面), with white sauce, is served with all-egg noodle tossed in lard oil sauce and added with thin slices of Johor-style char siew (lean barbecue pork) and scallion. Served separately is a bowl of savoury soup with 5 medium-size wantons (meat dumplings) — my pick of two pieces of yong tau foo are also added to the soup. The thin-flat noodle has a springy, crisp texture with nice flavour from the light sauce and the wantons are delicious with fresh, savoury minced pork. This is delicious indeed.

Not on the menu, Jie Sheng’s Vietnamese Pork Chop Rice (猪扒饭) is also available with egg noodle — I call it “Vietnamese Pork Chop with Egg Noodle (猪扒蛋面)”. The springy noodle with scallion and lard oil sauce is the same as the wanton noodle dish except that a piece of Vietnamese-style grilled pork chop is added on it. The lean-meat pork chop is nicely-grilled over charcoal and tender with nice flavours from the marinade without too much seasonings. It is also a great dish to go for. I will try Vietnamese Pork Chop Rice for lunch next time.
A surprise find is their Kopi Vietnam (越南咖啡). The coffee is filtered using a Vietnamese Phin filter and served with sweetened condensed milk after the filtering is completed. It came with a nice floral fragrance — not sure if the fragrance is from the condensed milk or from the Vietnamese coffee powder or fusion of both. The kopi is non-bitter, not too sweet and carries a really nice floral flavour. This is really good and definitely will go for it again.

The “principle” of Jie Sheng Mee Soup is “Deliciousness is worth waiting for, don’t buy if you can’t wait” (美味是值得等待、不可以等不卖). Do expect to wait for them to cook the dishes to perfection. Good food is meant for people with patience.
