Singapore Eat: Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway & Fish Soup (吃爽手工面粉粿.鱼汤) @ Bukit Batok

Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway & Fish Soup (吃爽手工面粉粿.鱼汤), a popular hawker chain, specialises in handmade mee hoon kway (面粉粿) and ban mian (板面). It has several outlets in Singapore and one of them is located in Get Together Coffee Shop in Bukit Batok West.

Aside from their signature mee hoon kueh with many ingredients, variants of the mee hoon kueh are available with different ingredients. There are tom yum, seafood, sliced fish and shabu shabu pork versions with mee hoon kueh as well. Their ban mian are served either with crispy chilli, mala or braised pork belly. They also added a series of fish soup and ke kou mian (可口面) to their menu

Jiak Song’s Signature Mee Hoon Kway (招牌面粉粿) is served with lots of ingredients with flat mee hoon kueh in a bowl of soup. There are minced pork, lean pork slices, a pork ball, a shrimp ball, a poached egg, greens and fried anchovies. The meat ingredients are fresh and tender and the soup tastes nice with a smoky flavour. This dish is really good.

The Shabu Shabu Pork Mee Hoon Kway (五花肉面粉粿) is served with standard set of ingredients (minced pork, a poached egg, greens and fried anchovies) plus big slices of pork belly. The mee hoon kueh and soup has same flavours as the Signature Mee Hoon Kway and the pork belly slices are fresh, soft and tender.

The Mala Ban Mian (麻辣板面) is served with similar tender lean pork slices, minced meat, a pork ball, greens and fried anchovies on ban mian — noodle can be changed as desired — dry-tossed in mala sauce and sprinkled with white sesame seeds. A poached egg floats in a separate bowl of soup that is the same as the soup for the mee hoon kueh. The mala flavour has a pleasant taste with just-nice spiciness and the flavourful soup gives this delicious dish more flavours.

Jiak Song’s mee hoon kueh and ban mian are delicious so far and I am game to try the other dishes.
