Singapore Eat: May’s Kafe Local Fares @ Beauty World

May’s Kafe is an open-space, self-service cafe located in the basement concourse of Beauty World Centre. It serves traditional coffee with a wide variety of affordable traditional local fares. The cafe has another outlet in Bencoolen Street.

In addition to various traditional toast sets with soft-boiled eggs, the little cafe serves a number of main dishes as well. There are several noodle dishes, nasi lemak dishes, roti prata, curry chicken, Japanese rice bowls and small bites, such as chee cheong fun. In other words, there is a dish for any race in Singapore.

The Nasi Lemak with Sambal Chicken is served with tender chicken in spicy sambal sauce and a fried egg on coconut-flavoured rice with peanuts, fried anchovies and pickled vegetables. The sambal sauce adds additional flavours to the nasi lemak. The dish is non-oily and nice.

Gyu Don, or beef rice bowl, is one of the Japanese dishes on the menu. It is a sweet-savoury rice dish with slices of beef cooked with sweet shallots, a poached egg, cherry tomatoes, salad, tsukemono (purple Japanese pickled cucumber), etc, and sprinkled with a flavourful sauce that is made with a number of ingredients, including black and white sesame seeds. A delicious dish with tender and juicy beef with distinctive flavours of all ingredients.
