Ipoh’s bustling Tong Sui Kai, Cantonese for “Dessert Street”, along Jalan Carey is a famous, open-air night market featuring over 50 hawker stalls that operate mostly around evening time. The stalls are renowned for affordable traditional hot / cold desserts, like ice kacang and mixed fruit ice, and many iconic local dishes such as wanton mee, rojak, curry noodles, beef noodle, porridge, barbecue, and the list goes on. Around a dozen of them are dessert stalls, hence the name “Tong Sui Kai”.

We tried the popular beef brisket noodle with cow stomach from Cheong Kee Beef Noodle (章记牛腩粉, Stall 47). The noodle dish is served with soft Ipoh hor fun, tender beef brisket and crunchy cow stomach in clear, flavourful broth. Must try the delicious beef noodle.

The yong tau foo, without carbs, is served with self-selected fishcake, fishball, tofu puff, stuffed tofu skin, fried tofu skin, etc, in a clear savoury soup. The ingredients are handmade and very fresh.

The barbecued chicken wings are well-grilled and looked so juicy. It is a tasty snack to go with any dishes or late-night desserts.

While Tong Sui Kai gets lively around evening time from 5pm till late night, individual stalls have their own operating days and hours. For travellers to Ipoh, visit the street and try whichever stalls that are open, unless there are specific must-visit stalls in mind.
