Nguan Express 88 (元) is a popular, budget-friendly hawker-style eatery that started in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8. It is famous for offering roasted chicken rice and soy chicken rice at only S$1.90 per dish / packet, and considered one of the cheapest and best-value meals in Singapore. In April 2026, Nguan Express 88 opened its new branch in Bukit Batok West Shopping Centre.

For S$1.90, the meat potion / part is determined by Nguan Express 88 — of course. Aside from roasted chicken rice and soy chicken rice, their char siew rice is also priced at S$1.90. Other roasted delights, like roasted duck and roasted pork, can also be paired with rice or sold as whole (for duck) or smaller portion of the meat. There are braised tofu and braised chicken feet too.

The Roasted Chicken Rice (烧鸡饭) has quite a decent portion of roasted chicken on light chicken-stock-flavoured rice with cucumber and citrus-spicy chilli. The nicely-roasted chicken carries a subtle roasty aroma with tender, firm texture and pairs well with the tasty chilli with mild-spiciness. This S$1.90 dish can really put other stalls selling just roasted chicken out of business.

The Soy Chicken Rice (油鸡饭) is also of decent portion with chicken-stock-flavoured rice — oops, the meat was laid on the other side and can’t see the skin beneath it. The soy chicken, dribble with some sesame oil, is also tender with mellow soy flavour and carries a slight aroma of the sesame oil. It is nice too.

The char siew meat (150 gram for S$5) is mostly with lean meat and cut slightly thicker yet it is tender and juicy with a sweet flavour and nice charcoal-grilled aroma. The grilled surface is crispy and without the taste of charred meat. This is seriously good.

Instead of taking-away the roasted meats and rice packets, the food can be consumed in Nguan Express 88 too. A table and few chairs are provided for dine-in and there are cold beverages for sales too.
