Update: Finally, after what seemed like 2 years of temporary closure, Naug Cafe reopened on the second level above Naug Just Plants, instead of in the same “backyard”. I will find an opportunity to visit the new cafe and update this post.
Naug Just Plants is a hydroponic house plants store cum cafe along Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk in Johor Bahru. Apart from selling plants that bring a touch of nature to any home or office spaces, Naug has “Hands-on with Nature” workshops too for customers to create landscape for their plants.

By the way, plants are allowed to be brought into Singapore so long as there is no soil.
At the back of the plant store is the little Naug Cafe, with most of its seats in the enclosed “backyard” behind the bar counter. A corner of the “backyard” looks more like the inside of a room except that the ground is covered with pebbles. The other corner has a mini-garden setting with brighter lightings. The little cafe has several large paintings hanging on the walls, on the tables and on the ground.

Naug Cafe serves mainly beverages and desserts. Their signature dessert is butter waffles with a selection of ice-creams with different flavours. Other desserts include cheesecakes and parfaits.

Their Espresso Ginger Ale is a unique soda option added with espresso — so I opted for it as a coffee. The beverage is served with ice-cold “ginger ale” soda in a glass, added with some slices of lime, and a shot of espresso in a coffee pourer.

I empty the espresso onto the ginger ale and watch as the dark coffee diffuses down the clear carbonated drink. The coffee also reacts with the gases to create a layer of foam above the drink. The cold, sweet and carbonated espresso ginger ale is a nice, interesting drink to have on a hot day, especially when it is hard to choose between a usual cup of coffee or an iced soda.

Naug Cafe’s half-size Gula Melaka Coconut Waffle is topped with a scoop of coconut ice-cream. The butter waffles, topped with dried shredded coconut and sweet gula Melaka (coconut sugar), has ice-cream sticks embedded in them. I guess it is meant to eat the waffles as though they are ice-creams. I let the coconut ice-cream melts on the crispy waffles before eating. This is truly an all-coconut dessert — it’s sweet, of course.

Under the new menu, the Gula Melaka Coconut Waffle is renamed as “Tropical” and served as whole waffle with cuts of banana in addition to coconut ice-cream and shredded coconut.
Naug Cafe makes another great option for relaxation while visiting Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk with special coffee / tea and some light desserts.
