Rengit is a small town in Batu Pahat District of Johor with several coffee plantations producing Liberica and Excelsa coffee beans. Due to the bigger seed-size of Liberica coffee beans, as compared to Arabica and Robusta beans, these beans are also called “elephant beans” in Malaysia. Rengit Coffee is one of the coffee producers that has its root in Rengit in the 1920s, specialising in “elephant” beans.
Rengit Coffee’s coffee is available for consumption and sales in a chain of espresso-bar cafes by Dagan Cafe. There are several Rengit Coffee by Dagan Cafe outlets in Batu Pahat District, one in Paradigm Mall in Johor Bahru and a newly-opened one in IOI Mall in Kulai District. I visited the outlet at Jalan Rahmat in Batu Pahat.

Rengit Coffee by Dagan Cafe serves its elephant coffees along with Malaysian local delights. It is a great spot to enjoy local food, sip coffee and buy coffee products.
Their hot Rengit Elephant Coffee is served covered with a layer of thick crema that gives a nice mouthfeel. The coffee is thick, tastes slightly bitter and with a unique nutty aroma from Liberica beans — no sugar and no milk is the best way to appreciate the real taste of the aromatic coffee.

The Kampung Fried Rice, with crispy fried anchovies, is added with a fried egg and fried chicken. It is accompanied by a sweet-savoury dark sauce that contains spicy sambal chilli. This local delight is flavourful and nice-tasting.

Rengit Coffee’s elephant coffee products, including imported coffee beans, are placed near the entrance. Both large-seed Liberica and Excelsa coffee beans — rarer and occupying less than 5% of world’s production of coffee beans — are available as roasted beans, in powder or pre-packed instant sachets.

For me to go all the way from Singapore to Batu Pahat to buy coffee, I will definitely go for the rarest Excelsa in powder (left) or beans (right). Note that “white coffee” means the roasted coffee beans are ground and pre-mixed without sugar.

Rengit Coffee may have rare “elephant beans luwak” (eaten and passed out by wild civet cats, not elephants) for sales once in a blue moon. Don’t miss it if you happened to see it — provided you wish to try it!
Oh, if Batu Pahat is too far, the Rengit Coffee outlet in Paradigm Mall is nearer to Singapore.
