Family Kedai Kek & Roti / Family Bakery / Family Pastry Shop (芳邻西点蛋糕), established since 1992, is a chain of pastry shops that sells a wide variety of cakes, breads and pastries. It operates several outlets in Batu Pahat, Parit Raja, Bukit Perdana, Yong Peng, etc, all within Batu Pahat District, Johor. Its bakery, known as Family Kerk Bakery, is located in Sri Gading, Batu Pahat.
I have visited the outlets at Jalan Rahmat — the nearest outlet to Batu Pahat Express Bus Terminal — and also the outlet in Yong Peng to get their popular ogura cakes and other cakes.
Family Pastry Shop sells a wide range of cakes with different flavours — chocolate, orange, sunflower, marble, coffee, butter, peanut, etc. They have vegetarian cakes as well. Some of the breads and pastries on the shelves look very interesting too.
The most popular cake of Family Pastry Shop is their Ogura Cake (相思蛋糕), which comes in several flavours: original, pandan, mocha, chocolate, orange, mint, coffee (new) and matcha (new). Each cake is specially packed in a plastic container with cover and sealed in plastic bag for ease of transporting and very suitable as gifts.
What’s so special about their ogura cake? It has a very fine texture, very fluffy and is surprisingly soft — like chiffon cake or Japanese cheesecake. The flavours of the cakes are light but distinctive. They taste very nice, not too much cream, not too sweet and best when paired with coffee or tea.
Apart from ogura cakes, other cakes are great to try too. The kopi cake gives off a slight coffee-caramel fragrance, tastes good and not too sweet.
So far, I have tried the original, pandan, orange and the new coffee and matcha flavours and really like them all.
Note that the ogura cakes are usually chilled and should be consumed within the day if not refrigerated. They can last for 5 days if refrigerated.
