Johor Bahru Eat: Char Koay Kak & Fried Oyster Omelette (炒粿角.蚝煎) @ Meldrum Walk Stall 02

Located in a back lane off Jalan Wong Ah Fook, known as Medan Selera Meldrum Walk (or Meldrum Walk Foodcourt), and towards the far end of the lane is a mobile stall numbered “02”. The stall does not have a name and it sells three local delicacies: fried oyster omelette (蚝煎), char koay kak (炒粿角, fried carrot cake) and char kway teow (炒粿条).

The Fried Oyster Omelette (蚝煎) has fried eggs added with rice flour and big fresh oysters (seasonal) and garnished with spring onions. The dish is non-oily, non-starchy and the fried eggs are crispy with light flavours. It is accompanied by a sweet-spicy dipping sauce that goes well with the oysters. A really nice dish to go for.

The Char Koay Kak (炒粿角) is traditional radish cake fried with beansprouts, lots of eggs and dark sauce. The dish is mild sweet-savoury and not too strong-tasting — unlike the dark-style fried radish cake (or fried carrot cake) in Singapore that is usually sweetened.

I have not tried the stall’s char kway teow and will be back again.

Next to Stall 02 is another stall that sells beverages, especially its glass jelly drink and lime & plum juice (吉仔冰 / kit chai peng), which are great drinks to complement the fried dishes.
