Located a stone’s throw from KSL City Mall in Taman Century, right beside Yong He Kway Teow (永和粿条), Restoran Yit Foh (益和面家) has been serving Malaysian-style traditional wanton noodles with egg noodles, barbecue pork and meat dumplings — all self-made — since 1970. This old-school eatery is the first outlet with several of its branches in other parts of Johor Bahru.

Yit Foh’s wanton noodles are available in three sizes: small, medium and large — medium / large will add more noodles. Side orders of their wantons (meat dumplings) are also available as fried (炸云吞), dry-tossed with sauce (干捞云吞) or in soup (云吞汤). In recent years, new items such as chicken chop with / without egg noodle, traditional margarine-kaya toasts set, nasi lemak (packet), mee siam (packet), three types of fried “burst” snacks, etc, were added.
The signature Wanton Noodle (云吞面) comes with slices of barbecue pork, greens and wantons in a bowl of soup. The thin egg noodle has springy, crisp texture and does not turn soggy in the wet sauce over time. The thin slices of barbecue pork is nicely done with mostly lean meat, tender and juicy. Needless to say, the meat dumplings are fresh, savoury and the size is made slightly smaller to give that “melt-in-the-mouth” texture. Be mindful that a “little spicy” for the noodle can still pack a real spicy punch.

To have more of Yit Foh’s fresh and delicious wantons, get a side dish of their wantons. Beside the fried and soup versions, try the Dry-tossed Wantons (干捞云吞) with dark sauce, oil, scallion and some chilli for different experience and more flavours. A small-size dish will have 10 pieces, medium 20 pieces and large 30 pieces.

The new Yit Foh Chicken Chop Noodle (益和炸鸡排面) is served with a large piece of fried chicken chop (cut into smaller pieces) on dry-tossed thin egg noodle with greens and a bowl of soup. The chicken chop — opted for spicy flavour — is nicely-fried till crispy outside, tender inside and with some spiciness in the delicious-tasting crispy batter. It is tasty and quite a hearty dish — or go for just the fried chicken chop without noodle as a side dish for sharing.

Yit Foh’s wanton noodle and meat dumplings are so good that it is hard not to keep going back for them again and again. I will try their new-launched “burst” snacks next time, which seem tasty.
