Singapore Buy: C’rius Bake @ Bukit Timah

C’rius Bake is a family-owned modern bakery, established in 2013, with its main outlet located in Bukit Timah Plaza and a second outlet on Level 2 of Beauty World Centre. The bakery bakes many varieties of fresh, artisanal confections daily, including cakes, sandwiches, tiramisu, sourdough (signature), French pastries, buns and more.

In the glass shelves for non-chilled items, there are various types of sourdough, wide range of buns, croissants, shiopan, baguette, cupcakes, bread loaves, English muffin, cookies, and more.

The Multigrain Sour Dough (杂粮酸种面包) is soft with slight chewiness and has lots of grains, like sunflower seeds, black and white sesame seeds, minced walnut, etc. It has a pleasant toasty aroma and the outer skin is not hard despite its appearance. It is nice to eat on its own, as staple in place of rice / noodle, or with melted cheese — my way of eating it.

The English Muffin (英式松饼), a yeast-leavened bread that is not commonly seen in confectioneries in Singapore, is sold in packs of 4 pieces each. The airy, soft, chewy texture of the English muffin is closer to soft sourdough rather than the “cupcake” muffin that we often associate with. Toasted on one side and coated with tiny cornmeal grains, the subtle-savoury bread can be eaten as it is or used as the bread for homemade burgers stuffed with anything as desired. This is a surprise find for me and I love it!

The Matcha Red Bean Loaf (抹茶红豆面包), available in half or full loaf, has a pleasant aroma when opened. The fluffy matcha loaf has sweet Japanese red bean paste threaded thinly into the dough with Japanese matcha powder before baking, giving the finished bread a nice flavour of matcha and red beans. The delightful tasting bread can be eaten on its own or with spread.

The Ham Cheese Croissant (火腿芝士羊角面包) has that nice, savoury flavours from ham and cheese and also the buttery croissant. It is a tasty treat with flaky layered crust.

C’rius Bake’s Shiopan is slightly bigger in size compared to others and looks fluffy. Before eating (few hours later), I heat it up a little to make its outside skin slightly crispier and the re-heated butter inside the bun will once again exude its buttery aroma. The aromatic shiopan carries a rich, savoury flavour of butter and the coarse salt on top gives a sharp saltiness that disappear as quickly as it comes. This is nice too.

On the shelf are also unlabelled jars of kaya. The dark-orange-coloured coconut jam has pandan aroma, nice flavours and low sweetness — probably the most flavourful and least sweet kaya that I have ever tried. This is a great find and I have bought it several times. They have the green-coloured option recently.

There is always something different to try on every visit to C’rius Bake, especially their sourdoughs, pastries and different buns. Definitely must go for their English muffins.
