Singapore Eat: Mary’s Economic Rice (美莉什菜饭) @ Bukit Batok

Mary’s Economic Rice (美莉什菜饭) is the owner stall of a new coffee shop, named “537 Mary’s Eating House”, below Block 537 in Bukit Batok Street 52. The stall is both a beverage stall and a mixed rice stall — payment for drinks and food to be paid separately.

Aside from mixed rice as quick and affordable option, Mary’s Economic Rice offers rice and noodle dishes too. There is a list of fried rice dishes under the “Special Fried Rice” section and several noodle dishes in addition to a “Rice” section that seems interesting — 5 types of meat (chicken, pork, fish, prawn or beef) can be mixed and matched with 5 different flavours (sweet & sour, ginger onion, dried chilli, sambal or black pepper) to create 25 different dishes to go with white rice. Egg and chicken chop can be added-on to the rice dishes.

The Shrimp Fried Rice (虾仁炒饭) is served with rice fried with egg, scallions and fresh prawns. The rice is well-fried with mellow eggy flavour wrapped around the rice grains with additional flavour of scallions and the fat prawns are crunchy. This light tasting dish is good for cleansing palate, especially after few days of eating stronger tasting, spicy food.

The Hor Fun (河粉) is served with fried kway teow with dark soy sauce and drenched in a gravy with fresh prawns, lean pork slices, fishcake slices, greens and a half-cooked raw egg. The sweet-savoury gravy has nice flavours, not too starchy nor fluid and the half-raw egg smoothen the dish and adds its fresh egg flavour. Of special mention, the flavour of dark soy sauce is just-nice and does not stand out too much. This is delicious!

Economic rice / mixed rice is often healthier, cheaper and offers a more balanced diet — they are the unsung heroes but it is not easy to write about the wide array of dishes. It is great that Mary’s Economic Rice offers cooked rice and noodle dishes like a zi-char stall and I have more options to go for, especially their 5 x 5 rice dishes — next on my agenda.
