Johor Bahru Eat: Restoran Carton King (纸箱王) @ Space Residency

Restoran Carton King (纸箱王), located in Carton King Street Mall in Space Residency (乐森世纪), barely 100 metre from KSL City Mall in Taman Century, is a well-known eco-friendly, carton-theme restaurant from Taiwan. But, it is more than just a restaurant, it is also a souvenir shop selling paper-made merchandise and gifts, as well as operating two cardboard-made trains that ferry kids around the street mall.

Carton King uses recyclable corrugated cardboards and paper in all its merchandise. And, that applies to the tables, chairs, walls, decors, etc, in the restaurant — the cardboards are very sturdy and able to hold the weight of couple of people. Besides the entrance to the dining area, a food exhibit features paper hotpots on paper stove with paper sliced meat, paper seafood, paper vegetable, paper mushroom, paper fishballs, etc — but, don’t worry, they serve real food.

Carton King serves a number of Halal-certified dishes including Taiwanese hotpots, Western food, Japanese food, vegetarian, etc. There is also a nasi lemak dish with Taiwanese fried chicken. And the popular Taiwanese braised meat rice (卤肉饭) uses minced chicken — this is something you probably won’t find in Taiwan.

Carton King (纸箱王): Menu

The Taiwanese Fried Chicken Rice (台式特色炸鸡排饭) is served with a bowl of braised minced chicken rice with a serving of Taiwanese-style fried chicken chop and three small sides comprising pickled salad, edamame and crispy crackers. The rice bowl contains short-fat Japanese rice, topped with sweet-savoury braised minced chicken and seaweed shreds, nicely-braised egg, broccoli, sweetcorn, carrot and dribbled with a sweet sauce —this is one of the dishes on the menu, I guess.

The fried chicken chop has aromatic, crispy batter with mild-spicy seasoning and garnished with shredded seaweed too. It is quite big and thick and pairing with the rice bowl makes this a pretty hearty meal. Overall, the braised meat rice and fried chicken chop have nice, delightful flavours and suitably tasty.

The hot Chamomile Tea is served in an all-familiar, take-away paper cup and it came in a cardboard-made cup holder that is designed to resemble a dice. The paper cup sits in the big round hole of “one”.

Dining at Carton King is an interesting and unique experience where most stuffs were made from cardboard and paper, except the food and beverages. You probably won’t find this experience elsewhere. I will try the intriguing paper hotpot next time — it should not be using super-hot flame to heat the hotpot directly, so how is it done?
