Johor Bahru Buy: Seremban Kee Mei Siew Pow (芙蓉奇美烧包)

Seremban Kee Mei Siew Pow (芙蓉奇美烧包), established in 1976, is a legendary Malaysian bakery famous for its handmade siew pow (烧包) with BBQ pork or chicken filling. Started as a small family-run business in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, the brand has expanded across Malaysia with over 200 branches and has even branched out to Singapore. It is recognised in the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest siew pow distributor.

In Johor Bahru, Kee Mei’s outlets can be found in Taman Century, Taman Sentosa, Taman Pelangi, Permas Jaya, Bukit Indah, etc. Beyond their signature siew pow, the outlets also offer Portuguese tarts, traditional kaya puffs, cream puffs, cheese tarts and various Chinese wedding pastries.

Kee Mei’s siew pows with either pork or chicken fillings look the same with golden baked crusts, except that the chicken version is topped with white sesame seeds.

The Pork Siew Pow (猪肉烧包) is filled with small cuts of tender barbecued pork and green peas within crispy thin, layered crust. It has a nice sweet-savoury flavour. The Chicken Siew Pow (鸡肉烧包) uses shreds of chicken meat with similar ingredients and baking methods, offering a slight difference in meat texture and near-similar taste. They are delicious indeed.

Unlike most traditional bakeries in Johor Bahru that offer only chicken siew pows, Seremban Kee Mei Siew Pow is one of the few bakeries that offers pork siew pows in addition to the chicken version— and with green peas, a tradition of Seremban-style siew pows.
