Singapore Buy: Munchi Pancakes (满记煎饼) Min Jiang Kueh

Munchi Pancakes (满记煎饼) is a popular Singapore brand that offers traditional min jiang kueh (曼煎粿), or apam balik, and their novel pancakes — called Munchi pancake and mini Munchi — with different combinations of flavours. The brand has many outlets across Singapore — mostly on the east side — and it opened a kiosk in West Mall, Bukit Batok, in May 2025. Subsequently, more outlets are opened in nearby areas, including Lot One Shoppers’ Mall in Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang, Hillview, Bukit Timah, etc.

For all 3 types of pancake, there is a selection of original, charcoal or green tea flavour for the skin with about 16 flavours for the fillings. For min jiang kueh, there are about 7 flavours for the fillings but may not be applicable for all skin flavours — original flavour for the skin is the best match for any filling flavours. Munchi and mini pancakes will have at least 16 flavours each. In all, there are over a hundred combinations of types and flavours.

Traditional min jiang kuehs are usually pre-made and laid in the glass shelves and may be heated up on request. Both the Munchi pancakes and mini Munchis are made on orders, need some waiting time and best to be eaten chilled.

The Original Sesame min jiang kueh has original soft and airy skin with generous black sesame paste, with black sesame seeds, as its filling. The pancake has surprisingly nice and rich flavours, mildly sweet rather than the bitterness of pure black sesame. The Original Peanut is similarly nice with peanut butter that contains crunchy crushed peanuts. They are indeed delicious.

The Green Tea Red Bean min jiang kueh has green tea skin with red bean paste filling (a popular combination for desserts). It has distinct flavour of green tea and rich red bean taste. Similarly, it is not too sweet. The Green Tea Peanut, with crunchy peanut butter filling, is the only other flavour available with green tea skin.

The charcoal-flavour skin of min jiang kueh has varying textures, firm, chewier outer surface to soft inside, no strong taste but with a distinctive charcoal aroma. I have tried it with grated coconut (top-left), hazelnut (top-right), biscoff (bottom-left) and black sesame (bottom-right). The fillings have nice, rich flavours and mildly sweet with different textures. Both hazelnut and biscoff fillings are added with crispy bits to make them crunchy and the black sesame paste is added with black sesame seeds for more flavour and texture.

Interestingly, charcoal-flavour skin can pair with all filling flavours for min jiang kueh except red bean paste.

Unlike traditional min jiang kueh that is made in larger size, fold and cut into small pieces before serving, Munchi pancakes are made individually and are around palm-size with sealed edges. The skins are thinner and lightly baked in a waffle-like maker yet they are usually served slightly chilled.

The custard-flavour pancake (top-left) has a just-nice sweetness and well-balanced flavours, not too eggy nor milky. The new Nanyang kopi-flavour pancake (top-right) has a smooth bitter-sweetness of milk coffee. Both the custard and kopi flavours seem to be seasonal. Other flavours I tried include earl grey (bottom-left) and pandan kaya (bottom-right). All Munchi pancakes use original-flavour skin and the fillings are of low sweetness.

The Mini Munchi comes in 6 pieces per order, with same selection of flavour for the skin and 2 flavours for the fillings — premium flavours will cost more. The original-flavour skin with (my picks of) premium fillings of earl grey (3 pieces) and Oreo cheese (3 pieces) are mild-sweet and with distinct flavours. The aromatic earl grey flavour has become my favourite.

I have tried the 3 different types of Munchi’s pancakes with different fillings and also the newest custard flavour so far. Will try more of their novel pancakes with other fillings.
