Mendon (面丼) is a Japanese casual dining restaurant located inside West Mall, in Bukit Batok Central. It is well-regarded for its range of comforting Japanese cuisine, ranging from udon and ramen to savoury rice bowls and sushi. There are popular Japanese-style side dishes to go with the main dishes as well.

The Shoyu Salmon Don, meaning “soy sauce salmon rice-bowl”, is served with a number of raw salmon slices, tiny fish roe, cucumber slices and pickled ginger slices on Japanese rice. Typically flavoured with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt, the sticky short-fat rice has a mellow savoury flavour with subtle aroma of the rice vinegar — this is like sushi rice and I can eat it on its own. The fresh slices of salmon carries a subtle sweet-savoury flavour of shoyu, without extra saltiness, and pairing with the pickled ginger slices adds sweetness and tanginess, giving a different taste experience from wasabi. And the orangish roe add tiny “pops” in the mouth when bitten. This dish is so good!

The Teriyaki Chicken Don is served with chicken meat (slightly torched), and a poached egg on Japanese rice and topped with teriyaki sauce and scallions. The rice has different flavours from the Shoyu Salmon Don — probably because of different ingredients and sauce used. The chicken is very tender and the sweet-savoury teriyaki sauce is just-nice to flavour the dish adequately. Mixing the poached egg with the rice smoothens it and adds sweet, eggy flavour to the rice in addition to the light aroma of scallions.

Aside from dining in, there are pre-packed boxes of chilled sushi, gunkan maki sushi, etc, by Edo Sushi, for take-away — I picked a box of 4 salmon sushi and 4 gunkan maki sushi (sweet corns, scallop wings, fish roe and shredded crab-stick). Salmon sushi has always been my favourite. The sushi are fresh and with nice flavours and varying textures — as usual, I go easy on the shoyu and wasabi like how a Japanese would eat sushi.

Mendon offers quality and delicious Japanese comfort food with fresh ingredients and at affordable prices. And, like many Japanese food, it is definitely a healthier choice.
