The noodle stall in the newly-opened Lava Foodcourt (Lava 食阁), below Block 150 in Bukit Batok West Shopping Centre, goes simply by the name “老林” — I translate it as “Elder Lim” for ease of reference. The stall offers a wide range of noodle dishes, including minced meat noodle, mee hoon kueh, ban mian, fishball noodle, prawn noodle, laksa, curry chicken noodle, mini wok noodle, etc, and also fried carrot cake (white / black), fried Hokkien prawn mee and century egg lean meat porridge.

The Sliced Abalone Minced Meat Noodle (鲍片肉脞面) is served with slices of faux abalone, lean meat, minced meat, slices of pig liver, braised mushroom slices, lettuce on mee pok (default) and garnished with fried shallots and scallions. The flat noodle is tossed in a delightful savoury sauce with mellow vinegary flavour, yet no sourish taste. The sweet mushrooms, tender meat and pig liver, and sweet abalone adds in to create a flavourful and satisfying bowl of minced meat noodle.

The Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (炒福建虾面) uses yellow noodle with medium-size rice vermicelli to stir-fried with 3 big fresh prawns, squids, shreds of pork belly meat and egg in not-too-wet, savoury gravy, and added with crispy fried pork lard, a lime and some sambal chilli before serving. The dish has nice flavours, not salty, and enhanced with flavours from the lime, sambal chilli (not too spicy) and fried pork lard. This Hokkien mee is nice too.

“Elder Lim” noodle stall is managed by an elderly couple, including probably Mr. Lim himself, so be patient when ordering and waiting for food. Great food takes time to prepare and they do it slow, steady and good!
