Consumption of dog meat is legal in China but is a controversial practice and not part of the mainstream diet for many Chinese citizens. While there is no nationwide ban, some Chinese cities, such as Shenzhen and Zhuhai, have banned the dog meat trade. However, the trade is legal in Chaozhou — and we stumbled on a stall selling the exotic dog meat.
Hongyi Dog Meat (红姨狗肉) is a little shop that sells braised dog meat as takeaways only. It is located along a little lane, away from Chaozhou Ancient City (潮州古城), and sees very few tourists.

A takeaway box of the dog meat, weighing around 300~500 grams, is hand-cut thinly with meat and skin and accompanied by lots of coriander and some braised sauce for slight savoury flavours. The cold, boneless meat has firm texture with chewy skin but not tough, especially during winter when cooled further by the atmosphere. It does not have any gamey taste. Heating the meat will have soften it slightly.

Dog meat usually comes from Native Chinese Dogs / Chinese Pastoral Dogs (中国土狗 / 中华田园犬), sometimes called “Yellow Dogs (黄狗)”, not just any types of dog that are usually kept as pets.
