Yee Hup Biscuits (余合饼家), established in 1981, is a renowned Malaysian traditional pastry brand for its signature hiong piah or beh teh saw (香饼 / 马蹄酥). Based in Ipoh, Perak, it started as a family business operating from their home and has grown into a major manufacturer of traditional pastries and snacks using traditional techniques. Beyond hiong piah, they produce a wide range of assorted biscuits, mooncakes, durian puffs, walnut biscuits, hampers, etc.
Yee Hup has several outlets in Ipoh with the Gerbang Malam outlet being the nearest to Ipoh Old Town. The outlet in Ipoh’s Sultan Azlan Shah Airport is convenient for travellers to get some traditional pastries before leaving Ipoh.

Yee Hup’s range of signature Hiong Piah (余合香饼) is well-known in Singapore and Malaysia — they can be found on shelves of many supermarkets and in shops selling local products.
The original-flavour Charbroil Recipe Hiong Piah has crispy, flaky, layered crust topped with roasted sesame seeds — and tastes better after slightly heating up in an oven per instructions on the packaging. The soft, low-sweetness maltose filling paired with the crispy crust to create a wonderful taste experience.

Yee Hup’s Sun Puff (太阳饼) is a crispy, bloated puff with flaky, thinly layered crust and soft, sticky maltose filling — it has an appearance unlike other sun cakes that I have tried and can easily be mistaken as a typical hiong piah without its packaging. The puff’s filling is not too sweet and the crust is softer than hiong piah. I have taken a liking to this pastry.

Yee Hup’s Wife Biscuit and Husband Biscuit are literally biscuits, not the Chinese pastry-style “cake” that we often assimilate with — as a result of the interchangeable / common use of “饼” (translated as “biscuit” in Chinese) to describe any dry, flat, but not necessarily hard breads.
Right: The Wife Biscuit (老婆饼), topped with white sesame seeds, has a savoury filling embedded within its thin wheat-flour crust with mellow flavours of five-spice and fermented beancurd — near similar taste as gai zai beng (鸡仔饼), a type of Cantonese cookie. It has a hard-crispy texture but the overall biscuit hardness is managed by reducing its thickness. It is a tasty snack.
Left: The Husband Biscuit (老公饼) has very similar appearance to the Wife Biscuit but its filling is added with dried shrimps to give it a richer flavour and also subtle spiciness from pepper powder.

When visiting Ipoh, check out the wide range of traditional goodies that Yee Hup has to offer and take home some biscuits for self-consumption or as hand-gifts for friends.
