Johor Bahru Buy: Sien’s Kitchen Mochi (阿贤厨房.雪媚娘)

Sien’s Kitchen (阿贤厨房) is a dessert brand based in Johor Bahru, famous for their range of fresh, hand-made snowy mochi. They specialise in Japanese-style yukimi daifuku (stuffed mochi) packed with generous fillings that are known for being plump, soft, and not too sweet. Sien’s Kitchen has two outlets in Johor Bahru: a kiosk outside the basement exit of KSL City Mall, near a durian stall, and the other is a shop on Level 3 of Paradigm Mall (main outlet).

Sien’s Kitchen’s signature mochis (雪媚娘) features at least 12 flavours, including fresh fruits (like strawberries, mango, peach), Oreo (original, matcha, nutella), and also durian, pistachio, yam, chocolate kunafa, tiramisu, coconut purple rice and more. They are freshly-made daily and kept chilled. Aside from mochis, there are other traditional desserts and chilled beverages too.

I picked 4 flavours of the mochis on the first visit: Chocolate Kunafa (巧克力), Durian (猫山王榴莲), Mango (芒果) and Taro / Yam (奶香芋泥).

All the mochis have thin, stretchy, and chewy skins and generously packed with light, fluffy cream with respective ingredients of the flavours specified.

Top-left: The Chocolate Kunafa (巧克力) mochi has a pattern on top of its yellowish skin with some chocolate chips. Inside the mochi are light cream with a chocolate biscuit-like thingy that gives a crunchy texture to the mochi.

Top-right: The Durian (猫山王榴莲) mochi has yellowish skin containing light cream and real Musang King durian pulp. It is soft, mild sweet and full of durian aroma and flavour.

Bottom-left: The Mango (芒果) mochi also features a yellowish skin and is differentiated by a piece of mango flesh on it. Inside the mochi are light cream with thick cuts of mango flesh, that are pre-treated so it is not mushy and not dry either. The mango flesh are sweet, giving the mochi its natural flavour and sweetness.

Bottom-right: The Taro / Yam (奶香芋泥) mochi, with purplish-grey skin, contains light cream and aromatic taro paste added with certain soft-crunchy bits for additional texture. It is mild-sweet with an enticing milky-taro flavour.

Although Sien’s Kitchen’s mochis are best eaten chilled and fresh at the stall / shop, they can be purchased and bring home too — do bring along a cooler bag if intending to buy some home to enjoy. As the skin of the mochis are very thin, they are best consumed within the day or latest by next day as the cold atmosphere of the fridge tends to try up the skin, resulting in loss of elasticity.
