Lian Pang Cake & Confectionery (联邦蛋糕西点), established since 1976, is a well-known confectionery in Kulai District of Johor, known for its old-school sponge cakes, wedding cakes and full-moon collection. The long-standing traditional bakery has been around for over 50 years.

Lian Pang makes a wide selection of cakes, including its popular sponge cakes, butter cakes, Swiss rolls, fruit cakes, traditional wedding cakes, Western cakes, muffins, etc. There are breads, buns, egg tarts, siew pows and other pastries as well.
Their highly-recommended old-school Yuanyang Cake (鸳鸯蛋糕) has both crushed peanuts and chocolate rice as toppings above a layer of light cream. Cakes with just one of the toppings are also available but the yuan yang version allows enjoyment of two flavours — or three when both peanuts and chocolate rice are eaten together — in one cake.

The great surprise is in the butter-chocolate sponge cake underneath the toppings, which is very light, soft and fluffy, non-greasy and the amount of fresh cream is not excessive. The cake has a light buttery flavour in addition to the distinct flavours of peanut and chocolate and very low in sweetness. This is one of the best cakes I ever tried — I can understand why locals in Kulai highly recommended it!

Aside from the round sponge cakes with peanut and chocolate flavours, Lian Pang also bakes Swiss rolls with the two flavours. The Peanut Swiss Roll has a pandan-flavoured sponge cake and the Chocolate Swiss Roll has a chocolate-flavoured sponge cake. These rolled cakes have slightly firmer textures than the round cake, due to the rolled-up structure of Swiss rolls, but still soft and fluffy. There are several other flavours for Swiss rolls too.

Another old-school bake of Lian Pang is their traditional wedding cakes — older folks (not me, my parents lah!) will know what they are right away. These cakes are getting rarer and more expensive in Singapore. It is really great to see the nostalgic cakes in Lian Pang and best of all, they are not chilled, meaning they are freshly-handmade and I can bring them all the way back to Singapore without worrying about them turning bad by the end of day.
The wedding cakes are pre-packed in boxes of 10 slices each. Similarly, the cakes are light and fluffy, non-greasy and not too much of the fresh cream, except for the top decorations but the thin cream-bases above the sponge cakes balanced out any excess. A special note is that the sponge cakes have different flavours — based on my tastebuds, there are 2 x lemon (yellow), 2 x orange (orange), 2 x beetroot (pink), 2 x chocolate (dark brown) and 2 x coffee (light brown). The colourful creams and coloured rices have nice flavours too and they do not add much sweetness to the cakes.

These wedding cakes can be enjoyed anytime, don’t have to wait for someone’s wedding.
If 10 slices are too much, Lian Pang offers smaller boxes of 4 slices with different cake flavours — the set below has flavours of (left to right) lemon, beetroot, coffee and orange. These cakes are really light and 4 slices will be gone in an instant.

Note that the cakes need to be stored in the fridge by end of the day and can last up to 5 days — it will probably be gone in less than 3 days anyway. After taking them out from the fridge, wait for them to return to normal room temperature before eating to enjoy the soft cream and fluffy cakes.
It is definitely worth the long journey — about an hour from Singapore — to travel to Kulai and to Lian Pang Cake & Confectionery to get these nice old-school cakes. And there are more awaiting me — the muffins, breads, siew pows, egg tarts, etc.
