Johor Bahru Bus / Train: To Kulai District in Johor (柔佛.古来)

Getting to most places within Johor Bahru or to nearby districts in the state of Johor, Malaysia, is easy using domestic public bus services. While most long-distance bus services are available from Larkin Sentral, short-distance services to adjacent districts, like Kulai District (古来) and Kota Tinggi (哥打丁宜), is accessible via JB Sentral, the transport hub nearest to Singapore and right beside JB CIQ checkpoint.

Aside from bus services, there are also train services between JB Sentral and Kulai District.

Note that Johor Bahru / Senai International Airport is located in Senai, which is a sub-district (mukim) of Kulai District. Getting to the airport is easier using the dedicated shuttle service, AA1, from JB Sentral Bus Terminal.

1. Bus Services

Travelling from Singapore to Kulai is best executed using public bus services — in terms of flexibility. Cross the Causeway to Johor Bahru, exit JB CIQ checkpoint and proceed to the bus terminal below JB Sentral.

From JB Sentral Bus Terminal, take BAS.MY J30 to Kulai District. The service will terminate at Kulai Bus Terminal, taking about 1 hour travelling time at 15 minutes interval via the Skudai Highway. See service route at Causeway Link website.

Getting to Kulai District, Johor (柔佛.古来) by Buses

Note that BAS.MY J30 used to stop at two bus terminals in Kulai, but that was changed. The service will terminate at Kulai Terminal now (RM4.20). Take BAS.MY J300 to continue to Taman Putri Kulai Terminal.

Kulai Bus Terminal is the nearest bus terminal to the new Kulai Train Station (opened in March 2025 — see Train Services section below) and several clusters of eating places and cafes. If you are familiar with BAS.MY J30’s route, drop off at the bus stop nearer to your destination instead of alighting at the bus terminal.

To go further to the northwest areas of Kulai, including Kelapa Sawit, beyond the coverage of BAS.MY J30 and J300, use either of these options:

  1. Go to Larkin Sentral Platform A and take City Bus 2 that is bounded for Ayer Hitam — at hourly interval. It will also make a brief stop at Kulai Bus Terminal.
  2. Take BAS.MY J30 from JB Sentral to Kulai Bus Terminal and change to City Bus 2 to northwestern Kulai. Note that Green Transit Liner GTL-01 also covers the northeastern part of Kulai but it has a 3-hourly interval (8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm).

2. Train Services

Kulai Train Station, newly-built and opened in March 2025, is located across Jalan Besar from Kulai Bus Terminal. Access the train station via Gate B, which is nearer to the bus terminal.

Kulai Train Station

The trains that stop at Kulai Station include the older, slower diesel-powered KTM Intercity trains and the newer, faster electrified-track ETS trains. And, also, the newly-implemented KTM Komuter trains, named “Shuttle Selatan” (see below).

ETS & KTM Intercity Services

Effective 1 August 2026, the slower KTM Intercity service operates as follow:

  • JB Sentral to Kulai: 6pm
  • Kulai to JB Sentral: 11:19am
  • Fare: RM11 per person (one-way)
  • Travelling Time: Approx. 40 minutes

The REGULAR timings of the newer, faster ETS services are as follow:

  • JB Sentral to Kulai: N/A
  • Kulai to JB Sentral: 11:53am, 7:13pm, 9:33pm and 11:58pm
  • Fare: Flexi-Fare System
  • Travelling Time: Approx. 16 minutes

During festive seasons or peak periods, additional ETS services may be inserted. The number of additional services may vary and bookings may be opened just few days in advance — my experience indicates just 3 days. A peculiarity in the system is that the timings of the additional services may be “more desirable” than the regular services at times but they may not be opened for bookings well in advance.

Shuttle Selatan

Launched on 16 June 2026, Shuttle Selatan (or “Southern Shuttle”) is a domestic train service connecting Kulai, JB Sentral, and Pasir Gudang with Kempas Baru as interchange station. The service route will be extended to Paloh, a sub-district of Kluang, from 8 August 2026 onwards, taking 120 minutes between JB Sentral and Paloh Station.

Effective from 8 August 2026, Shuttle Selatan services will be as follow:

  • JB Sentral to Kulai: 6:25am, 9:20am, 1pm, 6:15pm and 8:30pm
  • Kulai to JB Sentral: 5:13am, 6:59am, 11:28am, 4:43pm and 7:18pm
  • Fare: RM5.10 (one-way)
  • Travelling Time: Approx. 40 minutes

Note:

  • There is no selection of seats for Shuttle Selatan.
  • Purchasing of ticket(s) can only be done on day of travel.
  • Tickets purchased are valid on day of purchase only.

Note: All train schedules and fares are subject to changes, especially during festive periods, do refer to KTMB Online for up-to-date timings and fares. To save the hassle of going to train stations to get tickets, download KTMB’s official mobile app (called “KITS Style”) from respective app stores.

Do plan ahead and use either bus or train services to get to / from Kulai District.
