Johor Bahru Eat: Shu Da Xia Hotpot (蜀大侠火锅) @ Taman Sutera Utama

Restoran Shu Da Xia Hotpot (蜀大侠火锅), which hails from Chengdu of China, is a hotpot-restaurant chain offering authentic, fiery Sichuan-style hotpot. The chain has over 600 global outlets and one of them is opened in Taman Sutera Utama, in Skudai. The Skudai outlet is within easy walking distance from Sutera Mall.

Shu Da Xia’s hotpot can have up to three different types of broth and with different levels of spiciness for the spicy mala broth. There are 3 main types of raw meat slices (pork, beef and lamb) and with sliced premium parts of meat too. All other raw or cooked side ingredients or snacks are ordered from the menu.

Shu Da Xia Hotpot (蜀大侠火锅): Menu

Hotpot with dual broths, one spicy and one non-spicy, is the most common option. The pot is specially designed with two golden dragon heads that look elegant but are actually handles and the dragon horns double as holders for ladles. We have a spicy mala pork broth (清油麻辣汤) and a non-spicy mushroom broth (菌汤). For drinking the broth, it will be healthier to scoop up a bowl before cooking the other ingredients. The staff will top-up the broths when the level goes low.

We have sliced meat of Lamb Leg + Iberian Pork (猪羊天下), which are laid out and served on two half-rounded wooden “plates” that can be placed around the hot pot. The presentation is beautiful.

Our other orders include an additional plate of beef rib eye slices (精品牛肉), deep-fried rice cake with brown sugar (红糖滋粑) that are ready to eat, self-concocted condiment from the self-service corner, and sweet fermented rice (酒酿) — the residue after fermentation of rice wine — as dessert. And also a serving of shrimp paste (太极双滑) that we added later.

Raw ingredients are placed on a shelved trolley beside the table. Note that excess orders cannot be returned, so order only what can be finished. By the way, duck blood cubes (鸭血) — banned in Singapore — is one dish that Singaporeans may want to try. All the raw meat slices and raw ingredients are very fresh.

With fresh ingredients and tasty broths, Shu Da Xia Hotpot is a great place to go for sumptuous feasts. Reservation is highly advisable, especially on weekend and during peak hours.

A great news is that Shu Da Xia Hotpot has also started a new outlet in Tampines 1 Shopping Mall in Singapore — but no duck blood cubes, of course.
